Assembling the model

Carefully unpack the model and the boatstand.
The first step is to open the deck, so that the
receiving system can be installed. This involves
locating the hatch at the two liferafts and lifting it
carefully
Remove the motors by loosening the clamps
which hold them in place, and undo the shaft
couplings at the motor end. Solder G2 plugs to
the wires attached to the motors, then re-install
the motors in the hull. The motors are wired in
parallel, and rotate in opposite directions
(contra-rotating
arrangement shown in the wiring diagram (+ is
red, - is black). NOTE: the raised lug on the
plastic housing of all G2 connectors should
always be the positive terminal (red wire). If you
keep consistently to this principle, your batteries
and speed controllers will be interchangeable,
and the system will be protected against
accidental reversed polarity.
Check that the screws in the shaft couplings are
tight, as they may have come loose in transit;
re-tighten them if necessary. TIP: if the coupling
hose slips on the shaft end, remove the
coupling, clean it carefully, then glue the hose to
the end of the shaft using a drop of cyano.
Solder the connecting wires to the drive battery
terminals, and solder a G2 socket to the other
end. TIP: in the photo the solder joints are
shown insulated with pieces of heat-shrink
tubing, but insulating tape is also perfectly
adequate.
Press the rubber grommets into the mounting
lugs of the rudder servo, and push the brass
sleeves through them from the underside. Set
the servo to centre from the transmitter, and fit
the output arm on the servo output shaft. Fix the
servo in the mounting box using the retaining
screws supplied. IMPORTANT: take care not to
damage the servo lead. The servo box can now
be glued to the hull using cyano-acrylate
adhesive, prior to connecting the rudders.
Open up the outer and inner holes in one arm of
the servo output lever using a 2 mm Ø drill, and
install two swivel pushrod connectors as shown
in the photo. Set the servo to centre from the
transmitter, and fit the output arm on the servo
output shaft.
Connect the rudder pushrods to the swivel
connectors. Identify pushrods A and B, and be
sure to connect them to the servo as shown.
NOTE: you may need to use the servo travel
adjustment facility on your computer transmitter
to reduce the travel (angular movement) of the
rudder servo so that the steering arms do not
foul the hull side.
Attach Velcro (hook-and-loop) tape or double-sided foam tape to the speed controller and the
receiver and fix them to the hull sides close to the motor mount.
Connect the rudder servo and the speed controller to the receiver.
