Removing and
Replacing the
Recircula on
Pump
WARNING!

Failure to do so could result in

necessary to complete this
procedure correctly, do not
proceed. Seek assistance from a
qualified service technician.
Removing the recirculation pump:
Tools Needed: #2 Phillip's Head
Screwdriver
NOTICE: DO NOT USE ELECTRIC
SCREWDRIVERS OR DRILLS, HAND
TIGHTEN ALL SCREWS TO PREVENT
OVER TIGHTENING.
Disconnect power to the water

heater by unplugging it from
the wall outlet or turning it off
at the circuit breaker, as appropriate.
The power button on the water heater
and remote does NOT disconnect
power to the water heater. You must
physically disconnect power to the
water heater.
Use a non-contact circuit tester to
confirm that power is off before
working on or near any electrical
parts.
Shut off the gas supply to the water

heater at the manual gas shutoff
valve.
Use a Phillips-head screwdriver to

remove the 4 screws securing the

cover to the water heater. Set the front
cover and screws aside for re-installa on.
Locate the wire on the built-in

controller and follow it to the
computer board. Carefully disconnect
the
built-in
controller
computer board. Reference the wiring
diagram on page 28 or in the
maintenance sheet. Set the built-in
controller aside for re-installa on. See
Figure 77.

Shut off water to the water

heater and drain the system.
See draining page 29. Place a bucket
under the water heater and open the
plas c drain port located on the
bo om le side of the water heater.
Allow the system to completely drain
before proceeding.
Remove
the
three

fasteners securing the plas c
piping to the recircula on pump.
uses a 16A metal fastener, Connec ons
and
use 12.7A metal fasteners.

Connect the wiring removed

Secure the new recircula on pump

to the water heater with the two
screws removed earlier. See Figure 79.
Reconnect plas c piping joints.

Inspect the O-rings, if any cuts or
nicks
are
immediately. See Figure 78.
