Removing and
Replacing the
Exhaust Port Cap
WARNING

Tools:
#2 Phillips Screw Driver
NOTICE: DO NOT USE ELECTRIC
SCREWDRIVERS OR DRILLS, HAND
TIGHTEN ALL SCREWS TO PREVENT
OVER TIGHTENING.
Removing and replacing the
Exhaust Port Cap:
Disconnect power to the water

heater by unplugging it from
the wall outlet or turning it off
at the circuit breaker, as appropriate.
The power bu on on the water heater
and remote does NOT disconnect
power to the water heater. You must
physically disconnect power to the
water heater.
Use a non-contact circuit tester to
confirm that power is off before
working on or near any electrical parts.
Shut off the gas supply to the

water heater at the manual gas
shutoff valve.
Use a Phillips-head screwdriver to

remove the 4 screws securing the

cover to the water heater. See Figure 22.
Set the front cover and screws aside
for re-installa on.

Reference Figure 23 for the

loca on of the exhaust port cap.
Use a Phillips-head screwdriver to
remove and keep the screw securing
the plas c exhaust port cap to the
exhaust port.

Carefully pull the old plas c

exhaust port cap from the water
heater. Inspect the gasket on the new
exhaust port cap, ensure that it is good
condi on.
WARNING! The exhaust port cap
must be properly seated to prevent
exhaust gases from leaking. Failure to
follow can cause carbon monoxide
poisoning or death.
Place the new exhaust port cap

on the exhaust vent and secure
it with the screw removed earlier. See
Figure 23. Check the new exhaust port
cap to ensure that it is properly seated.
Replace the front cover and

secure with the four screws
removed earlier. Note the placement of
the built in controller when se ng the
front cover in place to ensure proper
alignment.
Turn on the gas supply to the

water heater at the manual gas
shutoff valve.
Reconnect power to the water
10
heater by plugging it into the
wall outlet or turning it on at the
circuit breaker, as appropriate. Press
the On/Off bu on to turn the water
heater back on.
Verify proper opera on of the

water heater.
