Write-Protecting Diskettes

Diskettes have a notch in the edge of their protective container. As long as the notch is
left open. the drive functions normally. Covering the notch with a piece of special tape
provided with the diskette prevents writing on the diskette. When you have a diskette
containing programs or data that you want to protect. cover the write-protect notch.
Then the information cannot be accidentally written over. If you want to write on the
disk later. the tape can be removed.

Labeling and Handling Precautions

In handling diskettes. be very careful not to touch the diskette itself. Handle it gently by
its protective cover.
Do not write on the protective jacket with a pencil or ballpoint pen since these could
damage the diskette. Use a marker pen and light pressure or write what you wish on a
label and then put the label on the protective jacket. Adhesive labels are available from
many sources.
Any magnet or magnetic field can affect data on a diskette. Do not bring any magnet
near a diskette . and do not put a diskette near or on top of anything that generates a
magnetic field. such as a television. a monitor. a speaker. etc. Also be aware of more
obscure magnetic sources. such as magnetic cabinet latches. magnets in chlldren's
toys. and magnetic note holders. As a general rule. do not store diskettes within three
feet of any magnetic source.
and disk drive are properly connected and power is
turned on to all units. Also. never insert or remove
diskettes when the drive light is on. And never have
a diskette in the drive when installing or removing the
cable. Diskettes should always be stored in their
protective jackets.
To insert a diskette in the disk drive. first open the disk drive door on the front of the
unit. Hold the diskette gently by the comer nearest the write-protect notch. and insert It
into the drive with the notch to the left. Close the door carefully.
To remove the diskette. open the disk drive door. and extract the diskette. Store it in its
storage envelope.
