Preventing Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) Damage
Electrostatic discharge (ESD) damage, which can occur when electronic cards or components are
improperly handled, results in complete or intermittent failures. The SSP comprises a printed circuit
board that is fixed in a metal carrier. Electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding, connectors, and
a handle are integral components of the carrier. Although the metal carrier helps to protect the board
from ESD, use a preventive antistatic strap whenever handling the SSP. Handle the carriers by the
handles and the carrier edges only; never touch the boards or connector pins.
Caution
prevent accidental removal, provide proper grounding for the system, and help to ensure that the
bus connectors are properly seated in the backplane.
Following are guidelines for preventing ESD damage:
Always use an ESD wrist strap or ankle strap and ensure that the wrist strap makes good skin
contact.
Connect the equipment end of the strap to a captive installation screw on an installed power
supply.
When installing an SSP, use the ejector levers to properly seat the bus connectors in the
backplane, then tighten both (top and bottom) captive installation screws. (See Figure 4.) These
screws prevent accidental removal, provide proper grounding for the system, and help to ensure
that the bus connectors are seated in the backplane.
When removing an SSP, use the ejectors to release the bus connectors from the backplane. Hold
the handle on the front of the SSP with one hand and support the bottom edge of the metal carrier
with the other hand. Pull the SSP out slowly, using your hand along the bottom of the carrier to
guide the SSP straight out of the slot.
Handle carriers by the handles and carrier edges only; avoid touching the board or any connector
pins.
Place a removed SSP component-side-up on an antistatic surface or in a static shielding bag. If
the SSP is to be returned to the factory, immediately place the SSP in a static shielding bag.
Avoid contact between the SSP and clothing. The wrist strap only protects the card from ESD
voltages on the body; ESD voltages on clothing can still cause damage.
Warning
measurement should be within the range of 1 and 10 megohms.
Always tighten the captive installation screws on the SSP. (See Figure 4.) These screws
For safety, periodically check the resistance value of the antistatic wrist strap. The
