Once a unit identification number is set, it is stored in the midplane VPD by the Enclosure Management
software and will appear when the enclosure is next powered on. In a situation where the VPD cannot be
read, or where there is no enclosure management (no SBB I/O modules, or a single module with
management failure) the enclosure will display "00".
Other uses
The unit identification number can also have the following uses:
v Error codes.
v Unit location identifier. This function sets the display to flash (3 seconds on, 1 second off) until it is
stopped, either through SES or by pressing the Input switch.
The unit identification number may be set via other methods. As previously stated, the new setting is
applied only after a power cycle. All other functionality remains the same as described previously.

Normal Power down

To prevent potential data corruption and data loss an orderly power down must be performed.
1. Ensure that all applications accessing the storage are either shut down or suspended.
2. Unmount the file systems using NDS and the corresponding vdisks that are part of the recovery
group with drives in the enclosure.
3. Shut down I/O server nodes that are accessing the enclosure.
4. Shut down the enclosure by switching off all the power swtiches of the installed PSUs.
When the enclosure has to be powered down to perform service actions, follow the instructions provided
by IBM service.

Locking drawers

A drawer can be locked shut by using a screwdriver with a Torx T20 bit to rotate both anti-tamper locks
until the red arrows point away from the center of the enclosure.
The following figure shows the locations of the locks.
