Program AE – p. 38
AE
A Aperture priority mode
This function allows depth of field to be set to any level desired. The
camera's shutter speed is automatically set to optimum in line with
the assigned aperture value.
When the aperture is open
(lowering the aperture
value), the focus range is
narrow (shallow depth of
field for subject). This
diffuses the background
and makes the subject
stand out.
What is depth of field?
When the focus is on the subject, things to front and back of the
subject look blurred, and the range at which the focus is actually
seen is called the depth of field.
When do you use it?
• When you are in a dark place and you want to have a bright
picture (open).
• When you want to make the subject stand out against an
unclear background (open).
• When you want both the subject and the background to stand
out clearly (closed).
,
When the aperture is closed,
the focus range is wide (deep
depth of field for subject). The
picture shows both the person
and the background in similar
clarity.
