Remote Connection with Fiber Cable
Fiber optic technology allows for longer cabling than any other media type.
A 100 Mbps multimode fiber (MMF) link can run up to 2 km, and a
100 Mbps single-mode fiber (SMF) link can run as far as 20 km. A
1000BASE-SX (MMF) link can connect to a site up to 550 meters away,
and a 1000BASE-ZX (SMF) link can run up to 100 km. This allows the
Fast Ethernet Routing Switch to serve as a collapsed backbone, providing
direct connectivity for a widespread LAN.
The 100BASE-FX (SMF) plug-in module or 1000BASE-ZX GBIC
module can be used to interconnect remote network segments. While a
1000BASE-SX module can be used for a high-speed connection between
floors in the same building, and a 1000BASE-LX module can be used to
connect to other buildings in a campus setting.
The figure below illustrates this switch connecting multiple segments with
fiber cable.
