5. Supporting SPB over legacy switched
network or Transparent LAN Services
When migrating to SPB, there may be parts of the network that may have a switch or switches between
SPB enabled switches that do not support SPM. SPM can be transported across a switched network
providing the switch supports Independent VLAN Leaning (IVL). IVL is supported on Avaya stackable
switches including the ERS 5000, ERS 4000, and ERS 2500 in addition to chassis switches including the
ERS 8300, ERS 8600/8800, and VSP-9000. The switch Ethernet ports facing the SPB nodes needs to
provisoned with the same VLAN ID's as the B-VLAN IDs provisioned on the SPB switches. Both B-
VLAN's should be added as tagged port members and Spanning Tree should be disabled.
If a Transparent LAN Service (TLS) is used between SPB nodes, nothing at all needs to be provisioned
as the TLS will accept any packet independent if it is tagged or not.
