field devices
For communication between field devices and Tablet PCs the following HART
modems can be used:
VIATOR Bluetooth HART Modem, Chapter
VIATOR USB HART Modem, Chapter
This chapter describes the structure of both communication options and the step-
by-step connection links to the field device via SIMATIC PDM (Chapter 8.3)
Physical connection of HART modems
The HART modem is physically connected the 4-20 mA current loop of the field
device through a terminating resistor parallel.
If a terminator is already installed in the hardware, the HART modem can be
connected directly to the terminals of the field device. The polarity of the HART
connections of the HART modem plays no role in both cases.

Setting up a link to the VIATOR Bluetooth HART
Modem
The VIATOR Bluetooth HART modem (BT HART modem) is a point-to point HART
PC modem for temporary connections to HART field devices. The host PC uses an
internal Bluetooth interface to communicate with the BT HART modem.
The modem has a battery life of approximately 20 h operating time. The batteries
can be replaced.
The BT HART modem is intrinsically safe and suitable for use in potentially
explosive atmospheres.
Bluetooth is a very secure protocol that includes several features that make it more
difficult to intercept the signal. The authentication of BT HART modems is via a
PIN-code entered by the user during the connection establishment process.
Thereby all the data that is sent over this connection, is encrypted with a unique
key that is created during the connection process.
