Front Features

1 – TBR/FLASH
(Timed Break Recall)
Interrupts line current
for the set duration.
2 – LNR (Last
Number Redial)
Redials up to 32
previous digits and any
pauses.
3 – POL
(Hi-impedance
Active Polarity)
No clicks are induced
on the line when the
POL button is pressed.
Polarity works in all
modes, even in parallel
with an off-hook phone.
4 – PAUSE (Program)
Three second pauses are added with every press of this
button, useful for easy access to charge-cards, etc. Use
in conjunction with LNR feature.
5 – GS (Ground Start/Earth Calling)
A 3-wire test lead is required to use this feature. Ensure
this is connected to ground, and then press GS just after
moving to TALK mode. Release when dial tone heard.
6 – TONE/PULSE selection
Select before switching to TALK. Pressing
mode switches the tester to DTMF for the remainder of
the call.
7 – BATT (Battery Low Warning)
In MON mode, when the LED first illuminates, it
indicates that approximately 2 hours of continuous
operation remain.
8 – Main Mode Switch
• TALK (off-hook): Use this mode for making and
answering calls. "Over current protection" helps
prevent damage to the tester if connected to a low
impedance feed.
• OFF/RING (on-hook): The tester should be left in this
mode when not in use (stand-by). The ringer (9) alerts
the user to AC voltages on the line, but uses negligible
battery current when idle. To reduce disruption to
digital traffic, the ringer impedance is higher than
normal on-hook impedance.
Note: The tester will not go off-hook while ringing
and the switch is moved from OFF to TALK. It will go
off-hook in the pauses in the cadence. If you hear
continuous ringing, BEWARE! This may indicate
"mains" frequency power on the line.

• MON (Monitor): Use this high impedance mode
to listen to the line before switching to TALK. No
line current is taken in this mode and no sound is
transmitted from the microphone to the line. The
tester will automatically power off within five minutes
4
when not connected to a powered line to save battery.
It will also automatically power on when connected to
5
a powered line if the switch is left in MON position.

Unusual Sounds in the Earpiece?
• Hiss: Fax, modem, or digital traffic.
• Loud, continuous low frequency hum: May be AC,
7
BEWARE!
8
• Loud, cadenced low frequency hum: May be ringing.
Check by switching to OFF.

PROGRAM Mode
While on a working telephone line, off-hook (TALK
mode), a long press of the PAUSE button will activate
Programming mode, indicated by a short tune. After
hearing the tune, choose the function, then the setting,
and finally confirm by pressing
by the short tune or rejected by an error tone. Here you
can set TBR time, DTMF level, and PULSE ratio.
