Water crossing
f Pay attention to the ground clearance of the
vehicle. This information is provided in the
chapter Technical Data in this Driver's Manual:
Please observe the chapter "GROUND CLEAR-
ANCE" on Page 352.
Danger!
Danger of drowning if water enters the
vehicle. Risk of damage to the engine and
accessories if water penetrates.
f Before driving through water, check the water
depth A, water speed and the condition of the
surface beneath it.
The water depth A must not exceed 55.5 cm
(in special terrain level setting).
f Make sure that the door sills and rubber seals
are clean before starting to drive.
f Do not drive through deep or rapidly flowing
water.
Deep or rapidly flowing water such as
mountain streams can cause the vehicle to
deviate from the desired path.
f Avoid producing bow waves by driving at an
appropriate speed.
f Never open the doors when driving through
water.
Soiling can impair the braking action.
f Check and clean the brakes if they have been
soiled.
Danger of steering assistance failing during
a long journey in water if the drive belt slips.
f If the steering assistance fails, more effort will
be required to steer.
Danger of damage to the electrical systems.
f Avoid driving through salt water.
