POTENTIAL SOURCES OF CO IN THE HOME
:uel-burning appliances like:portable heater, gas or wood burning fireplace,
jas kitchen range or cooktop, gas clothes dryer.
>amaged or insufficientventing:corrodedor disconnected water heater
rent pipe, leaking chimney pipeor flue, or cracked heatexchanger, blocked
>r clogged chimney opening.
mproper use of appliance/device: operating a barbecue grill or vehicle in
in enclosed area (like a garage or screened porch).
transient CO Problems: "transient" or on-again-off-again CO problems can
)e caused by outdoor conditions and other special circumstances.
The following conditions can result in transient CO situations:
1. Excessive spillage or reverse venting offuel appliances caused by outdoor
conditions such as:
• Wind direction and/or velocity, including high, gusty winds. Heavy air in
the ventpipes(cold/humid airwith extended periods between cycles).
• Negative pressure differential resulting from the use of exhaust fans.
• Several appliances running at the same timecompeting forlimited
fresh air.
• Ventpipe connections vibrating loose fromclothes dryers, furnaces, or
water heaters.
• Obstructions in or unconventional vent pipe designs which can amplify
the above situations.
2. Extended operation of unvented fuel burning devices(range, oven,
fireplace).
3. Temperature inversions, which can trapexhaust closeto the ground.
4. Car idling inan open or closed attached garage,or near a home.
These conditions are dangerous because they can trap exhaust in your
home. Since these conditions can come and go, they are also hard to
recreate during a CO investigation.
UNDERWRITERS LABORATORIES INC. UL2034
WHAT LEVELS OF CO CAUSE AN ALARM?
Jnderwriters Laboratories Inc. Standard UL2034requires residential CO
Marms to sound when exposed to levels of CO and exposure times as
described below. Theyare measuredin parts per million (ppm) of COover
:ime (in minutes).
JL2034 Required Alarm Points*:
» Ifthe alarm is exposedto 400 ppm of CO, ITMUST ALARM BETWEEN
4 and 15 MINUTES.
» Ifthe alarm is exposed to 150ppmof CO, IT MUST ALARM BETWEEN
10 and 50 MINUTES.
• Ifthe alarm is exposedto 70 ppm of CO,IT MUST ALARM BETWEEN
60 and 240 MINUTES.
kApproximately 10%COHb exposure at levels of10%to 95% Relative
Humidity (RH).
The unit is designed notto alarm when exposedto a constantlevel
of 30 ppm for 30 days.
IMPORTANT!
s
m 4 ., ^
+
COAlarms are designedto alarm beforethere is an immediate life threat.
Sinceyoucannotsee or smell CO, neverassume it's not present.
• Anexposureto 100 ppm of COfor20 minutes maynot affectaverage,
healthy adults, but after4 hours the same level maycause headaches.
• An exposure to 400ppmofCOmay cause headaches inaverage, healthy
adults after 35 minutes, but can cause death after 2 hours.
IMPORTANT!
,,'„,., ,
ThisCO Alarm measures exposure to CO over time. It alarms ifCO levels
are extremely high ina shortperiod oftime, or ifCOlevels reach a certain
minimum overa long period of time. TheCOAlarm generally sounds an alarm
before the onset of symptoms in average, healthy adults.
Why isthisimportant? Because you need to be warned ofa potential CO
problem while you canstill react in time. In many reported cases ofCO
exposure, victims may be aware thatthey are notfeeling well, butbecome
disorientedand can no longerreact well enough to exitthe building or get
help. Also, young children andpets may be thefirst affected. The average
healthy adult might not feel any symptoms when theCO Alarm sounds.
However, people with cardiac or respiratory problems, infants, unborn babies,
pregnant mothers, orelderly people canbe more quickly andseverely affected
byCO. If you experience even mild symptoms ofCO poisoning, consult your
doctor immediately!
Standards: Underwriters Laboratories Inc.Single and Multiple Stationcarbon
monoxide alarms UL2034.
According to Underwriters Laboratories Inc. UL2034, Section 1-1.2: "Carbon
monoxide alarmscovered bythese requirements are intended to respondto
the presence ofcarbon monoxide from sources suchas, butnotlimited to,
exhaust from internal-combustionengines, abnormal operation of fuel-fired
appliances, andfireplaces. CO Alarms areintended to alarm at carbon
monoxide levelsbelowthose that could cause a loss of ability to react to the
dangers ofCarbon Monoxide exposure." This COAlarm monitors the airat
the Alarm, and is designed to alarm before COlevels become life threatening.
This allows you precious time to leave the house andcorrect the problem.
This isonly possible ifAlarms arelocated, Installed, andmaintained as
described in this manual.
Gas Detection at TypicalTemperature and HumidityRanges:
^
The CO Alarm is not formulatedto detect CO levels below 30 ppm typically.
ULtested for false alarm resistance to Methane (500 ppm), Butane (300 ppm),
Heptane (500 ppm), Ethyl Acetate (200 ppm), Isopropyl Alcohol (200 ppm)
.and Carbon Dioxide (5000 ppm). values measure gas and vapor concentrations
in parts per million.
Audible Alarm: 85 dB minimum at 10 feet (3 meters).
GENERAL LIMITATIONS OF CO ALARMS
COAlarms may not be heard. The alarm horn loudness meets or exceeds
current UL standardsof 85 dB at 10feet (3meters). However, Ifthe COAlarm
is installedoutside the bedroom, it may not wake up a sound sleeper or one
whohas recently used drugsor has been drinking alcoholic beverages. This
is especially true ifthe dooris closedor only partly open.Even personswho
are awake may nothearthe alarm horn ifthe sound is blocked bydistance or
closed doors. Noise from traffic, stereo, radio, television, airconditioner, or
otherappliances may alsoprevent alert persons from hearing the alarm horn.
ThisCOAlarm is not intended for peoplewhoare hearing impaired.
COAlarmsare not a substitute for a smoke alarm. Although fire is a
sourceof carbonmonoxide, this COAlarm does not sense smokeor fire. This
CO Alarm senses CO that may be escaping unnoticedfrom malfunctioning
furnaces, appliances, or othersources. Early warning offire requires the
installation of smoke alarms.
COAlarmsare not a substitute forWeinsurance. Though these COAlarms
warn against increasing COlevels, BRK Brands, Inc. does notwarrant or imply
in any way that they will protect lives from CO poisoning. Homeowners and
renters must still Insure their lives.
COAlarmshave a limited life.Although the COAlarm and all of its parts
havepassed many stringent tests and are designed to be as reliable as
possible, any ofthese parts could fail atany time. Therefore, you must test
your CO Alarmweekly.
COAlarmsare not foolproof. Like all otherelectronic devices, COAlarms
havelimitations. They can only detect COthat reachestheirsensors. They
may notgive early warning to rising CO levels iftheCO iscoming from a
remotepart of the home, awayfrom the COAlarm.
This CO Alarm is intended for residential use. It is not intended for
use in industrial applications where Occupational Safety and Health
Administration (OSHA) requirements for carbon monoxide detectors
must be met.
COalarmsmay not waken allindividuals. Ifchildren or othersdo not readily
waken to the sound of the CO alarm, or ifthere are infants or family members
with mobility limitations, make surethatsomeone is assigned to assistthem
in the event of an emergency.
QO Alarms will not workwithout power. This Alarm contains a sealed,
non-replaceable battery.
CO Alarms for Solar or Wind Energy users and battery backup power
systems: AC powered COAlarms should only be operated with trueor pure
sine waveinverters. Operating this Alarm with most battery-powered UPS
(uninterruptible power supply) products or squarewave or "quasi sinewave
inverters will damage the Alarm. Ifyou are not sure about your inverter or
UPS type, pleaseconsult with the manufacturer to verify.
This CO Alarm will not sense carbon monoxide that does not reach the
sensor. This CO Alarm will onlysense CO at the sensor. CO may be present
in other areas. Doorsor other obstructions may affect the rate at whichCO
reaches the CO Alarm. Forthis reason, ifbedroomdoors are usually closed
at night, we recommend you install a CO Alarm ineach bedroom andin the
hallway between them.
COAlarmsmay not sense COon anotherlevelof the home. Forexample,
a COAlarm on the second level, near the bedrooms, maynot sense CO inthe
basement. Forthis reason, one CO Alarm may not give adequate warning.
Complete coverage is recommended. Place CO Alarms oneachlevel ofthe
home.
