Chapter Two
A cartridge unloads when it moves from the drive and is placed in the magazine. In this
state, the drive is off-line, and the host cannot perform any operation that would cause tape
motion (write, read, space commands). The NonStop server can issue the LOAD command
to put the tape drive on-line. Additionally, the NonStop server can execute any diagnostic
command that does not access the tape.
A cartridge semi-loads when the cartridge is in the tape drive mechanism, but the tape is
not threaded around the head. The tape drive is off-line in this state.
The tape loads at the end of the load sequence. Then the tape drive is on-line and can
execute all commands, including those that set configurations or run diagnostic tests.
