Mechanical Brakes
Brake Lever Travel
Measure the clearance between the le-
ver and brake block. Inspection should
be made with the lever firmly de-
pressed. Distance B should be no
more than 3/4" (1.9 cm)
Excessive travel indicates a need to
adjust the brake cable adjuster. Refer
to the mechanical brake adjustment in-
formation on page A--39.
Chain Tensioner
Inspect the chain. The chain should have 1" of deflection as shown. If not, loosen
the nut on the chain tensioner and raise until 1" of deflection is attained. Tighten
nut to 15-18 ft. lbs.
When the chain comes within 1/8" of the muffler mount bracket on the chassis, the
chain has stretched and must be replaced.
Inspect the sprockets as they also become worn and often need replacement
when the chain is replaced.
