Display messages

One of the following messages may appear or flash in the display during operation.

Blank Disc
Cannot Copy
Cannot Edit

Cause and countermeasure
The system is making an analog recording of the sound from a component
connected to the VIDEO1 or 2 jacks (CS/BS or LD/DVD jacks for DHC-MD717).
m —
Silence continued for 30 seconds or more during digital recording, so the Auto
Cut function activated to replace the silence with a blank of about 3 seconds and
pause the recording.
m Press ·∏ to restart the recording at the desired point.
If you do not want to shorten the space between tracks, turn off the Smart Space
feature (see page 54), then start recording over from the beginning.
The inserted recordable MD is brand new or all tracks on the MD have been
erased using the Erase Function.
m —
The sound source is a copy of a commercially available music software.
m The Serial Copy Management System prevents you from making a digital copy
(see page 89).
A commercially available premastered MD is inserted in the deck.
m You cannot edit a premastered MD.
The deck is in Program or Shuffle Play mode.
m Press CONTINUE to return to normal play.
A commercially available premastered MD is inserted in the deck.
m You cannot record on a premastered MD.
MD editing finished normally.
m —
There is no time remaining on the disc.
m Replace the disc with a new one.
The system is ejecting the disc.
m —
You tried to do an impossible MD editing operation.
m Start editing over from the beginning (see pages 64 and 66).
You cannot combine the track due to the system limitations of MDs.
m Editing cannot be done as specified.
MDs do not record a track continuously, but instead record the data efficiently
while searching for empty space on the disc. This lets you record and edit an
MD repeatedly. However, when you repeatedly record and edit an MD, the
track is recorded bit by bit scattered over the disc. These scattered tracks cannot
be combined with other tracks due to the system limitations of MDs.
