Preface This DeskBook B165 is the alternative to your desktop PC, making innovative use of desktop components including the CPU, memory, hard disk and LCD. Connect one end of the AC adapter to the DC-in port on the computer’s rear panel and the other end to a properly grounded power outlet. Important: When plugging the AC adapter into the system, make sure that the arrow on the plug is facing down. Note: If you plugged in the AC adapter the wrong way, the AC adapter will automatically shut down.
Slide the display cover latch to the left (1) and open the display (2) to a comfortable viewing angle. Press and release the power switch (3) to turn on the power. The POST (power-on self-test) routine executes and Windows begins loading. Note: To turn off the power, use the Windows Turn Off command to shut down the computer.

1 Getting familiar with your computer Display The graphics display offers excellent viewing, display quality and desktop- performance graphics. The computer supports Thin-Film Transistor (TFT) liquid crystal display (LCD) displaying vibrant colors at high resolution. Simultaneous display The computer’s crisp display is great for viewing movies or giving presentations. If you prefer, you can also connect an external monitor when giving presentations.
Indicators The computer has easy-to-read status indicators (LEDs) under the display screen. Function Description Power button Lights when the computer is on. This also serve as the power button. 1 Getting familiar with your computer Touchpad The built-in touchpad is a pointing device that senses movement on its surface. This means the cursor responds as you move your finger on the surface of the touchpad. The central location on the palm rest provides optimum comfort and support.

• Press the left (1) and right (3) buttons located on the edge of the touchpad to do selection and execution functions. These two buttons are similar to the left and right buttons on a mouse. Tapping on the touchpad produces similar results.

1 Getting familiar with your computer Storage This computer supplies you with the following media storage: • High-capacity 3.5-inch desktop hard disk • Ultra-slim internal 3.5-inch floppy drive • Slim-type optical drive Hard disk The high-capacity hard disk is the answer to your storage needs. This is where your programs and data are stored.
Inserting a disc First flip down the optical drive cover. Press the eject button to eject the drive tray, and pull out the drive tray. Note: When power is off, you can eject the optical drive tray using the emergency eject hole. See page 76 for detail.
1 Getting familiar with your computer Place a disc securely on the spindle until it clicks into place, and close the drive tray. Playing DVD movies To play DVD movies in your computer, just insert the DVD disc into the drive and the DVD movie will automatically play after a few seconds.

1 Getting familiar with your computer Connectivity options The computer has built-in features for connecting to a network and communicating with other computers. Ethernet and LAN The built-in network feature allows you to connect your computer to an Ethernet- based (10/100 Mbps) network. To use the network feature, connect an Ethernet cable from the network jack on the rear of the computer to a network jack or hub on your network.

To use the fax/data modem port, connect a phone cable from the modem port to a telephone jack.
1 Getting familiar with your computer Audio Your computer includes 16-bit high-fidelity AC’97 stereo audio. There are also audio ports on the right panel of the computer. See “Right view” on page 6 for more informations.
Securing your computer Security features include hardware and software locks — a security notch and password. Security notch A security notch located on the rear panel of the computer lets you connect a Kensington-compatible computer security lock. Wrap a computer security lock cable around an immovable object such as a table or locked drawer handle.

System activity refers to any activity involving one or more of the following devices: keyboard, mouse, floppy drive, hard disk, peripherals connected to the serial and parallel ports, and video memory.

Your computer offers excellent expansion capabilities with its built-in ports, connectors and bays. This chapter describes how to connect peripherals and hardware options that help you use your computer with ease. When connecting peripherals, read the manual included with the peripheral for operating instructions.
External monitor You can connect an external monitor to the external monitor port. Read the monitor manual for additional instructions. Note: If an external monitor is not connected, closing the display cover puts the computer into Standby mode. Using simultaneous display Your computer takes advantage of Windows multi-display capability, allowing you to use your computer for presentation purposes.
2 Peripherals and options S-video The S-video port allows you to output to a television or display devices that support S-video input. This is useful if you want to do some presentations or watch movies on a bigger screen.
External keyboard This computer already has a full-sized keyboard with an integrated keypad. If you feel more comfortable using a desktop keyboard, you can connect a PS/2 external keyboard. To connect an external keyboard, plug the external keyboard into the PS/2 port. You can also choose to connect a USB keyboard to the USB port.
2 Peripherals and options External pointing device This computer accepts either a serial mouse (shown below), PS/2 mouse, USB mouse or a similar pointing device. Connect the mouse to the appropriate port.
Printer You can connect a printer to the parallel port as shown below. You can also connect a USB printer to the USB port. See your printer manual for operating instructions.
2 Peripherals and options USB devices The computer has a total of five USB (Universal Serial Bus) 2.0 ports which allow you to connect peripherals without occupying too many resources. USB 2.0 is the next-generation USB standard that offers faster transfer rates and is, at the same time, backward compatible with USB 1.1.

Before disconnecting a USB device, make sure the device is not being used; then select the Safely Remove Hardware icon on the taskbar and click the appropriate device.
2 Peripherals and options IEEE 1394 devices The computer's fast IEEE 1394 ports allow you to connect IEEE 1394 supported devices like a digital video camera or optical drive. See your peripheral's documentation for details. Before disconnecting a USB device, make sure the device is not being used; then select the Safely Remove Hardware icon on the taskbar and click the appropriate device.

2 Peripherals and options Key component upgrades Your computer delivers superior power and performance. However, some users and the applications they use may demand more. This computer allows you to upgrade or replace key components when you need increased performance. Note: Contact your authorized dealer if you decide to perform a key component upgrade.
Closing the computer After you have finished upgrading/replacing the components inside the computer, replace the cover (1, 2) and secure it with the screws (3). Processor To upgrade the processor, follow the instructions below: Follow the instructions in “Opening the computer” on page 44.

Disconnect the power connector and signal cable (1); lift the four rubber locks holding the hard disk (2); slide out and lift up the old hard disk as shown in the illustration below (3, 4).
Follow the instructions in “Closing the computer” on page 45 to close the computer. Memory This DeskBook B165 computer comes with two PC2100 266MHz/PC2700 333MHz DDR sockets that accept 128/256/512 MB modules. Please consult your dealer if you need to add more memory.
2 Peripherals and options Optical drive The computer comes with an optical drive which can be upgraded, follow the instructions below to upgrade: Follow the instructions in “Opening the computer” on page 44. Note: The optical disk drive and the floppy drive are attached to a common tray to form a module.
Slide the new optical drive into the module (1) and replace the screws (2). Lift up the lock for the signal connector (1); carefully insert the signal cable into the connector (2) and push the lock down to secure the cable (3); replace the optical/floppy module (4) and slide it in until it click into place (5).
2 Peripherals and options Remove the screw (1), keep it in a safe place and slide out the floppy drive (2). To install the floppy drive, slide it into the module (1) and replace the screw (2). Follow the instructions 5 and 6 in “Optical drive” on page 50 to finish installing the floppy drive module.

Remove the screws securing the VGA card housing (1, 2, 3, 4), and set these aside; remove the VGA card housing (5) to access the VGA card. Carefully remove the old VGA card from the card slot.

Disconnect the Kensington lock if you are using one to secure the computer. If your DeskBook B165 comes equipped with a handle, fold the heavy-duty handle of the DeskBook B165 up towards the rear panel. This will make your computer easier to carry around.

4 Software Launch Manager Launch Manager allows you to set the launch keys located above the keyboard. See “Launch keys” on page 22 for the location of these keys. You can access the Launch Manager by clicking on Start, All Programs, and then Launch Manager to start the application.
BIOS Utility The BIOS Utility is a hardware configuration program built into your computer’s BIOS (basic input/output system). Your computer is already properly configured and optimized, and you do not need to run this utility. However, if you encounter configuration problems, you may need to run it.

4 Software When you select an item in the BIOS Utility, the function description will appear at the right side of the screen. Caution: Some parameters in the BIOS Utility screens are for advanced users only. Typically, you do not need to change the values in the screen because these values are already optimized.
Password Option The Password Option Setup menu allows you to safeguard and protect the system from unauthorized use by setting up access passwords.
