Solid State Recorder Generation 2 User's Manual Software Revisions 1.1.0 IGITAL UDIO ORPORATION A DRI COMPANY "THE POWER TO HEAR – THE POWER TO CONVICT"...
SSABR G2 has been specifically designed for law enforcement applications in which a concealable, high quality recorder is required. The SSABR G2 is light and compact, making it easy to hide on an agent’s body, in an automobile, in a wall or ceiling, or in virtually any other small space. It is housed in a rugged aluminum case to withstand even the most difficult conditions in the field.
The unit will still remember any schedule that has been programmed into the flash memory and the real-time clock will continue to run (the SSABR G2 also contains a Lithium “coin” battery that powers the clock – this battery can only be replaced by DAC).

RECORD MODES The SSABR provides two basic record modes of operation , Normal Mode and Button Safeguard Mode. These modes are selected via the Security Tab within the Configuration Window of the Configuration and Download Utility Software (see Section 4.4.3.) The first mode is Normal Mode (Section 2.2.1).
2.2.2 Button Safeguard Mode REMINDER: Button Safeguard Mode must be selected via the Security Tab within the Configuration Window of the Configuration and Download Utility (see Section 4.4.3.) To power on and begin recording: In Button Safeguard Mode the SSABR unit will power on and begin recording under one of two circumstances: 1.
2.2.3 Using An External Harness When using an external harness, the ON/OFF slide switch is normally used to automatically power-on the SSABR unit and start a recording. To prevent a recording from being accidentally started by depressing the REC/PLAY/STOP button while a harness is attached, the REC/PLAY/STOP button must be held down for at least two-seconds before a recording will start.
PLAYBACK MODE To place the unit in the playback mode, headphones must be inserted into the headphone jack. To begin playing a track: Press the REC/PLAY/STOP button. If using a harness, slide the ON/OFF switch to the “ON” position. The unit will begin playing the first track (track “1”) recorded on the unit. To stop playing a track: Press the REC/PLAY/STOP button.
TRACK MANAGEMENT As described previously, a track is defined as the audio recorded between a record/stop cycle. Appending or concatenating current tracks is currently not supported by the SSABR unit. Each track, when downloaded from the unit, will create a separate WAV file when the Wave File Creation Utility is used. Each track will be time-stamped based on the local time or on Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) set by the SSABR software upon configuration.
SSABR G2 TIME/MESSAGE DISPLAY (LCD) The SSABR G2 Time/Message Display (LCD) provides information about the current status of the unit. The table below gives a description of the messages shown on the four-character LCD. Table 2-5: SSABR G2 LCD Message Descriptions...
. Next, attach the USB cable to the SSABR G2 and then to the computer. You will see the letters “USb” displayed on the LCD of the SSABR G2 once it has powered up. Follow the instructions detailed in the “Readme” file.
Many CD-R drives include Roxio™ Easy CD Creator software. This software includes a utility called DirectCD. DirectCD allows the SSABR G2 software to write directly to a CD-R drive as if it were a standard hard drive. If this software is not already included and installed on your machine it can be purchased from Digital Audio Corporation.
SSABR G2 unit must be connected, via a USB port, to a PC running the SSABR G2 software. Using the software, this image file can be moved to a CD-R disc or to the PC’s hard drive.
SSABR G2 unit contains recorded audio or is empty. If it contains recorded audio you will begin the process of downloading the recorded audio. If the SSABR G2 unit is empty you will begin the process of configuring the unit for further recording. The wizard will guide you through the rest of the configuration and download process.

CANNOT BE RECOVERED. NOTE: It is not necessary to format the SSABR G2 unit’s flash memory if tracks are listed in the track list as being “incomplete”. After the flash image is downloaded the unit will be reset to an empty state ready for further recording.
Configuration Window. This window allows you to set the record mode, edit the recording schedule, and set the security options. You will notice a short delay as the CDU software loads the current SSABR G2 settings into the Configuration Window. Any changes to the Configuration Window will be programmed in the attached SSABR G2 unit by clicking the OK button.

Each time a selection is made the Estimated Recording Capacity area is updated showing the estimated amount of time the SSABR G2 unit will allow for recording. This area will allow you to configure your SSABR G2 for the optimal recording quality while meeting your recording length requirements.
Multiple tracks can be scheduled. All schedules are stored in the on-board flash memory and will be retained even if the AA battery is removed. The SSABR G2 allows up to 256 different scheduled events. Each scheduled event is recorded as a separate track.

SSABR G2 unit is full. If the SSABR G2 unit is recording a track and the available memory runs out, the recording will be ended without loss of the previously recorded data in that track.
The “Enable Audio Erasing” checkbox determines if the local erase feature is enabled. If this feature is enabled, all the recorded audio on the SSABR G2 can be erased by holding down all the buttons for approximately five seconds. To disable this feature, un-check this option. To allow local erase, check this option.
4.4.4 File and Help Menus Use the File menu to Save a configuration to disk for use in other SSABR G2 units or to Open a configuration file of commonly used settings. The Help menu can be used to view the online help information about the CDU software.
The image files are named according to the following naming scheme: [prefix]_[current date (month-date-year)]_ [current time(24-hour)]_[SSABR G2 Serial Number].ig2 For example, an image file downloaded on July 9, 2004 at 2:04 PM on SSABR G2 Unit 00104 (with a prefix of “Local PD”) would be: Local PD_07092004_1404_00104.ig2 Many CD-R drives come with a software package called Easy CD Creator.

To deactivate the AVA, uncheck the checkbox. NOTE: Because the SSABR G2 has a large dynamic range, and the microphone placement greatly affects the recording level, the volume level may need to be turned up substantially to be heard on PC audio speakers. The audio is best heard through quality headphones.
You can also use the Fast Forward and Rewind buttons to traverse through the audio track. Click and hold the Fast Forward to skip forward to the track. Click and hold the Rewind button to skip backward in the track. LOOP CONTROL WINDOW Clicking the Loop On button on the Main window will activate the Loop Control Window.

This AGC will ensure a louder audio level in the created wave files. The AGC is useful because of the large dynamic range of the SSABR G2. This dynamic range allows recording of both very quiet and very loud audio. However, normal recorded audio levels will result in very quiet sounding wave files without the use of the Automatic Volume Adjustment to amplify the levels.
This value will default to the value which was selected in the Preferences Window. The wave files are named according to the following naming scheme: [prefix]_[track start date (month-date-year)]_ [track start time(24-hour)]_[SSABR G2 Serial Number].wav For example, a recording made on July 9, 2001 at 2:04 PM on SSABR G2 Unit 00104 (with a prefix of...
“John Doe”) would be: John Doe_07092001_1404_00104.wav The Break Up Wave Files option will be set to the default option specified in the Preferences Window and will segment each track into wave files of no longer than ten minutes in length. Each separate wave file will have the same basic name with “_1”, “_2”, and so on, appended to each file name.

Figure 6-8: Wave File Creation Error Log The Figure 6-8 is of an example log file for a track that contained errors. This particular file had several errors at five minutes and 41 seconds. Each time location error that was detected is noted in the log file as well as the time location from which the error was recovered.
CD’s for use in standard CD players. Audio CD’s require that the sample rate of the wave files be 44.1 KHz (which equates to the bandwidth setting of 20 KHz on the SSABR G2). Audio CD’s also require the stereo mode to be stereo, not mono.
GND of the external power supply. 8.2.2 Remote Control Switch An external control switch can be used to start and stop the recording process on the SSABR G2. Both momentary (push-button) switches and slide switches can be used. Only a 2-wire connection to SSABR G2 connector is needed.
Page 50
8.2.2.2: Slide Switch Wiring To connect a slide switch to the SSABR, only two wires are required. To signal to the SSABR G2 that a slide switch is being used, the “Moment Switch” should be wired to the GND pin. This is best done within the Telocate connector housing.
Note that the “Microphone Select” pin on the Telocate connector must be grounded to notify the SSABR G2 that an external microphone is being used. Without this short, the built-in microphones will be used. This connection is best done within the Telocate connector housing.
