certain
the transmission
gear
shift
or selector
lever
is
in
neutral. (On
au
tomatic transmission
models, engine
will
not
s
tart
unless
transmission
is
in
neutral
"N
"
posi-
tion.
Power
glide
models
may also
be
started
in
Park
"
P"
position.)
Depress
the clutch
pedal,
if
so eq uipped,
to
re-
lieve
the
load
on
the
transmission.
3. Place
ignition key
in
switch and turn key
clockwise
to
"ON"
position.
4.
Turn the ignition k
ey clockwise
against
spring
tension to
cr ank engine. RELEASE KEY AS SOON AS ENGINE
STARTS
:
If
engine
does
not
start
in
5
to
10
seconds, re-
lease
k
ey
and
check to
see
if
above
instructions
have
been
performed correctly.

A S'soon as engine
s tarts,
push
choke
knob
in
part way and
a
djust throttle for sm ooth idle.
6.
Note
oil gauge
(or indicator)
and ammeter
(or
generator
indicator) readin
gs.
Ammeter
should show charge
or
light
should
be
off
unless engine
is
idling slowly.
The
charging
rate
shown
on an ammeter
with a
fu lly
ch
arged
battery
may
be
so
slight
tha
t the needle may
appear to r emain
centered on the
gauge a
nd
not
move
away
from the
gauge
center
mark.
The
oil
gauge
should
show
some
pressure
or
indicator
light sh
ould
go
out.
On
vehicles
equIpped
with
oil
pressure
light
be
certain
light
is
off
before
continuing,
if
still on
,
stop
engine and
determine
fault. On
vehicles
eq
uipped with
an
oil
pressure
gauge,
in
unusually
cold
weather the oil
gauge
needle may
move all the
way over
to "60."
If
so, run
the
engine
just
above
idling
speed
until
the
indicat.or
hand
drops
to
around
the center
of
the
gauge
before
dri",ing
vehicle.
The choke knob
should
be pushed
in
all
the way
as soon as
the engine
is
sufficiently
warmed
up.
CAUTION
:
Excessive use of the choke
.
will
provide a fuel-air mixture too rich to
burn.
Some of this unburned fuel will leak post
the pistons and dilute the engine
oil.
This
will cause improper lubrication, excessive
engine wear and poor performance
.
7.
Check the temperature
gauge while
oper
a ting vehicle
.
Norma}
operating range
is
between
"e"
and
"H
"
marks.
H ot
wea ther, long
h ard
driving,
or
prolonged
idling
may
cause
the
needle to b
e
in
the
high ra
nge
of
the
gauge .
