Accessing Morningstar Workstation Morningstar Workstation modules may be accessed by the Desktop icon or from the Windows Start menu, All Programs, Morningstar Workstation. LaunchPad A centralised user area from which you can: • Launch all Morningstar Workstation modules: Reports, ChartDeck, Composites,...
SmartFind Allows you to quickly navigate to a fund, index or currency and trigger a number of commonly used Workstation tasks based on your selection. This is accessible from the Home section of the Launchpad. Finding a fund Start typing in the search box to begin your search. Hovering over a fund in the results window displays additional information to help make your selection.

You can access your previous searches from the drop down arrow. Further guidance notes are available online via the “?” icon. Once you have selected a fund three icons – Reports, Charts & Factsheet become activated allowing you to utilise your selection within the Workstation modules.

Updating manually By selecting the option Update Manually your system will run data updates only when triggered by a user with update permissions. To run a manual update simply click on the Run All button. Should you not wish to update your system to the latest date select the update you want to update to and click Run Selected.
Download settings The default setting is ON, the folder location default to the Updates subfolder within your Workstation directory. This feature should only be turned OFF if an IT department downloads update files separately which are subsequently collected from a different network location and run by the updating user. Clicking on the spanner icon gives access to update all download related settings such as download passwords and proxy settings.
Email confirmation This function will trigger an email to a defined distribution list following an update, indicating whether it was successful or not. Set this up by clicking on the spanner icon. System Details The System Details section holds details of your subscription. The System Support section allows you to view and carry out a number of support related tasks.

Tree Selection Selecting a Class of Fund Click on the Class symbol in Section 1 of the dialogue box, choose the class/database required from Section 2 using one of the following methods: • Double-click on the required class or module (it automatically attaches to the yellow folder in the Fund/index Selection tree in Section 3).
For any group(s) selected, provides list of all their Manager funds. To refine your selection, use the following options: (Morningstar Workstation Sector classification) This selection presents a list of geographical areas allowing you to choose specifically which investment locations you require.
If you want to attach benchmarks/indices to any sectors selected, click on the following symbol from Section 1 of the dialogue box: This option allows you to select any individual funds/indices from the database and attach Fund/Index them as benchmarks to the classes/sectors you have chosen. It also displays which class/sector/area a fund belongs to.
To View the Content of Sector(s) in the Tree Selection Double-click on any sector attached to the tree and a dialogue box appears showing the contents of the sector; thus you can check the presence of particular fund(s) in the chosen sector(s) before continuing.
To Edit your Tree Selection From the Menu bar select Data – Fund/Index Selection or click on the Toolbar Icon . You may also double-click on the fund list. Make the necessary changes and click on OK to validate. Your new selection will show in your report.
To Select Performance Criteria From the Menu bar select Data – Performances or click on the Toolbar Icon A Performance Columns dialogue box appears. Charges, Income and Currency Settings Once you have chosen your time periods, you need to select your calculation basis. Click on the Income/Charges tab in the top- right corner of the Performance Columns dialogue box. Click on the drop-down menu arrows adjacent to the Income, Class of Investor and Currency selections and choose the required options.
Scheme Type Selection Click on the Scheme tab to view settings. Report Facilities Supplementary Data A large number of additional fund information such as Latest Fund Size, Fund Launch Date, Bid/Offer spread and many more is held on the database. To access this data, select Data – Supplementary Data from the Menu bar or click on the Toolbar Icon A dialogue box opens displaying the list of Supplementary Data items available.
Scroll down the list of data items at the top of the dialogue box or use the List Member Functions category to bring List Lookup; highlight this and click on the Add button to add. In the snapshot above, note how the first report contains funds from various sectors sorted on the 1-year time period ranking. We have 3 funds in first position, 3 in second position, etc. Once the ranks have been combined, all funds are ranked together, regardless of their sector of origin.

Highlighting Funds To highlight a single fund: Right-click on a fund to highlight it. To highlight a group of funds To use the block highlight function, right-click on a fund and click on Start Block Highlight. Right-click further down the list on another fund and select End Block Highlight to highlight all funds in-between these two points.
Fund Facts Right-clicking on a fund name in reports will enable the pop-up menu described on the previous page. Click on Fund Facts from the menu and the window below will appear. The screen will remain visible for a few seconds and then automatically close. If you wish the window to remain permanently on the screen then toggle the pin (top-right corner) to make it “sticky”.
A floating bar chart is available through Workstation Reports. You may use this option to show your fund performance against its GIF sector, Morningstar Category or Management Group. From a Report list, right-click on the fund of your choice and click on Sector Chart. In this example let’s select the fund’s GIF sector.
Index/Movement/Portfolio Size Line Charts You may access Index, Price Movements and Portfolio Size Line Charts along and have up to 20 funds in either type of chart. In the Fund Name column, right-click on the fund of your choice – In the example below, the fund ranked Nº1 over 3 years was selected.
The option This fund and previous will appear after you select the line chart type if some funds precede the fund of your choice in the Fund Name column (see example in Movement Line Charts). You may also highlight funds first; an option to chose these highlighted funds will appear once you have chosen the type of line chart.
Assign Benchmark to this Fund This function enables the user to chose individual benchmarks when calculating an Alpha, Beta, etc., over a given time period. From Data – Performances, set up the time period of your choice and click on the Scheme tab. In the example across we selected Alpha.
Right-Click on Columns Pop-up Menu This menu will typically appear when you right-click on the report column headers. Find in Column… allows the user to search for a specific value or name (instead of using the scroll bar). Decimal Places allows modification of the number of decimals on all performance data or funds and indices or sector statistic.
Scatter Charts Scatter charts can be created for a whole universe of funds – the number is unlimited. In the example below, two time periods were inserted in the report with 3 years % Change and Volatility. • Right-click on the % Change column header and select Scatter Chart – This column in Y axis.
Fund Comparison Module Compare up to 20 funds and obtain information, statistics and performance over various preset time periods. The Portfolio Size column displays the assets under management at the start and at the end of our time period (in terms of millions of the currency selected in your Workstation report). MPT Statistics Sheet (Excel) The MPT Statistics Sheet enables the user to compare up to 20 funds in a Excel spreadsheet over a given time period. An Indexed base (on 100) line chart of the funds’ returns will be displayed as well as the statistics as chosen by the user.
Copy Options Three options are currently available within Reports: • Copy Displayed Sector – will copy only the report sheet displayed on your screen. • Copy All Sectors – will copy all report sheets (when you made multiple selections in your Fund/Index Tree Selection.
Export to Excel A new option (available from the Edit menu) is Export to Excel. Click on the Excel icon (or go to Edit – Export to Excel) and the Excel spreadsheet will open on your screen, with the exported data. Logarithmic Scale From the chart settings area you can choose to select a Log Scale to show the true perspective of the funds. The vertical axis of a log scale chart will show equal percentage changes as equal distances. For example, if a fund rises from 100 to 110, then later rises from 200 to 220, on a linear scale the second rise will appear twice as large as the first even though in both periods the fund has risen by 10%.
Text Settings Heading & Legend Properties Change and format and contents of the chart heading & legend. You can either choose to insert or delete entries from items available in the auto text drop-downs or manually type in the text you require.

AutoUpdate The auto-update option is enabled by default. When selected this means the chart and all associated output files (selected at the point of saving, see above) will automatically update with the latest data following each data update. Chart Batching The Batch function allows you to plot a large number of line charts with the same settings for a large number of funds in a given market and management group. Create a Batch To create a new batch select Batch > New Batch or click new batch from the opening popup screen.
Select run now to trigger the batch. Once the batch has been completed a notification message will be displayed and your charts and images available in the directory selected. Modify a Batch To modify the batch select Batch> Modify batch from the menu options and edit the selections required.
Private Funds The Private Funds module allows Workstation users to enter and maintain their own fund information on the database. This can then be compared and analysed with other funds/indices available from the fund modules subscribed to. The data entered is stored in a special area of the database separate from the Workstation data. From the LaunchPad click once on the Private Funds icon to launch this section.
Any new information will see its cell highlighted in blue until it’s saved to the database. Drop-down menu fields • Currency • Acc/Dist • Net/Gross To change any of these items, use the drop-down menu in the relevant cell and select the appropriate option.
Historical Data Fields These allow multi-data entry (only one entry per date) via the Price and Dividend History window, where fields can be edited at any time. This window can be accessed by double-clicking in one of the cells under the Latest Prices and Latest Dividend main columns. To enter data double-click in any of the cells facing your new fund under the following headers and you will access a secondary sheet:...
Dividends History Move on to the Dividends History page to enter dates and values. Simply enter your XDates, XPrices and Rates. Click on Done to close the Price and Dividend History window to return to the main sheet. The data in the Latest Prices and Latest Dividend columns is updated.
Editing Data Static data Double-click on the cell, erase and re-type the entry in the cell. Historical data Double-click on the relevant cell to open the Price and Dividend History window and edit any prices. The system will automatically present any relevant new weekly or monthly dates to enter the prices against.

Return Sheet Rebalancing The Return Sheet displays Indexed returns, Percent Change returns, Contributions and Weightings for the composite, the individual funds and the benchmark (if selected) on a weekly or monthly basis. Negative returns are highlighted in red. You may now set your rebalancing options as you see fit – for this you must have selected the Manual rebalancing option from the Fund Settings dialogue box.
Correlation Matrix The Correlation Matrix displays the closeness of the funds compared to each other. Values will be between -1 and 1 (the closer to 1, the more correlated a fund is to the fund it’s compared against).
Index Line Charts Index Line charts will display the composite itself alongside its components. The Data Editor may be brought in by simply clicking on its Toolbar icon - it displays the returns based on the frequency the user chose.
Scatter Chart The Scatter chart displays the composite as well as its components. The Dashboard may also be brought in. The snapshot above also demonstrates that right-click menus are available on the Legend (to the right), but also on the X & Y Axis legends.
