Each control adjusts it’s corresponding input signal over a 30dB range. With signal applied to input(s) turn up the INPUT level pot(s) until the red CLIP LED just barely lights. -

Connect the cable shield at the ground connection of the 581E only. If you experience hum or noise, make sure that both the 581E and the device which you are feeding are grounded on the same AC mains circuit.
