    PRECAUTIONS IN USE IAM interconnection The IAM unit conforms with the IEC 950 standard for electrical safety. The unit does not have a power switch, the power receptacle serves as a means of selecting the power supply. Furthermore, the electrical socket must be installed close to the hardware and easily accessible.

    Precautions in installation Avoid installing the IAM unit in a damp room or close to a radiator. Do not open the IAM unit - contact after-sales service for any repairs. If you live in a region where there are frequent thunder storms, protect the IAM unit suitably against voltage surges.

    INTRODUCTION You have just acquired a modem. IAM is the ideal solution for everyone who wants the benefits of e-mails but without using a PC. IAM is the first standalone Internet Answering-Machine that not only automatically records your e-mails but also allows you to read their contents on its LCD display without the need for a PC.

Figure 5: Serial DB9 male/DB9 female cable. Make sure that it is connected. Connect the 9 pin female end of this cable to a serial port of your PC (COM1 or COM2).

    STEP • • INSTALLING AN ARA SCRIPT FOR MACINTOSH You must use a modem script for the Internet connection. To install this script, insert the supplied CD ROM and start the installation program. Click on Install ARA script. The ARA script is automatically copied into the System folder, Extensions, Modem script.

    IAM: Insert the CD ROM in the drive of your PC and start the self-extracting program CIAMUK.EXE. this, click \KORTEX V90\Configuration\International. In the first window displayed, choose the program installation unit. The name of the directory is generated automatically (\CIAM).

    Information about your Internet account This window allows you to enter information concerning your Internet connection. Refer to your Internet provider for any extra information. Login Specify the Login that you use for your Internet connection. This name is indicated by your Internet provider. It is used for identification on the server of the Internet provider.

    Call parameters The button allows you to choose the dialing prefix and the type of dialing. Enter the number(s) to be dialed for access to an external line. If you are on a direct line, do not enter anything in the prefix. Specify the type of dialing that you use.

    TCP/IP parameters This window allows you to enter information concerning the server of your Internet connection. Refer to your Internet provider for any extra information. Outgoing mail (SMTP) Indicate the address of your SMTP server given by your Internet provider for outgoing mail.

    Specify the e-mail address given by your Internet provider for receiving your electronic mail. The e-mail address is of the form name@cpmpany for example smith@kortex.com. DNS server addresses If necessary, indicate one or two DNS (domain name service) server addresses. Check if these addresses are indicated by your Internet provider.

    Call scheduling You can define the times when IAM will connect to your Internet provider to retrieve e-mails without a PC or with the PC powered off. After entering this information click on to indicate the call parameters. ISP Call Schedule Tick the box Call ISP to activate or deactivate an automatic call to your Internet provider.

    Remote loading of e-mails You can choose to retrieve your e-mails in various forms: synthesized, text and voice or both. Tick the box corresponding to your choice. The Keep server copy option will keep copies of the e-mails so that you can retrieve them with a PC the next time you connect to the Internet.

    Follow me IAM has a function allowing you to program an automatic follow me call to a telephone number of your choice when voice messages, faxes or e-mails are received. This window allows you to define the times when your IAM will automatically connect to the number that you have defined to advise you of the presence of new messages.

    Call back telephone number Indicate the telephone number for an automatic follow me call. Do not enter a prefix at this point. Access code The password or code for remote querying is asked for after a follow me call. This code is essential for the call. Immediate callback in presence of new messages Tick this box if you want IAM to call you automatically after receiving new messages.

    ý Check the connection of your telephone cable. Is your terminal connected after a private branch exchange (PABX)? KORTEX modems are intended for a standard telephone installation, so connect your card to a direct telephone line if possible. See that it only dials after detecting the dial tone (440 Hz).
