environmental awareness can be achieved without compromising
performance and driveability. Improved fuel economy speaks for itself
but lower CO
emissions also save you money on vehicle tax. Now that's
2
something to smile about.
This is not achieved through engine development alone, of course,
and some Astra ecoFLEX models also feature front and underbody
aerodynamic fine tuning, optimised gear ratios and a 'shift-up' indicator.
Petrol Engines. Astra offers two petrol engines to suit every driver's
requirements. Astra's proven entry engine, the 1.4i 16v uses Variable
Valve Timing to produce 100PS while returning excellent fuel economy
and low CO
emissions, putting it comfortably in tax band B. Add a

water-cooled turbocharger, intercooler and some high tech to a version
of that same engine to get the 1.4i Turbo: power increases by 40% and
torque by 53%, both at lower revs to give a much more dynamic,
responsive drive; but it remains superbly efficient, also in tax band B.
Diesel Engines. Astra has a wide range of diesel engines, all designed
for economy but offering a range of driving experiences to ensure
driving economically doesn't compromise on enjoyability: all of these
super-efficient Astra diesel engines with manual transmissions are in the
lowest tax band A. The 1.3CDTi 16v has double overhead camshafts,
common rail direct injection, a variable-geometry turbocharger and
an intercooler...the result of all that high technology is that while it
produces an impressive 95PS and 190Nm of torque, it still ekes out
incredible economy (4.1l/100km) and low emissions (109g/km). A choice
of two 1.7CDTi 16v engines is also available: using the same impressive
technology but developing 110PS (260Nm of torque) or 125PS (280Nm)
for more performance with little impact on economy. The most tempting
blend of power and efficiency has to be the 2.0CDTi 16v with 165PS and
Please note that performance and economy figures above refer to the Astra 5-door models with
standard wheels: Sports Tourers and models with optional wheels may differ.
Astra's range of ecoFLEX engines
clearly demonstrate that
an amazing 350Nm of torque: this unit offers sports car performance
with outstanding fuel consumption. It has superb acceleration, getting
from a standstill to 100km/h in just 9 seconds, but more impressively gets
from 80-120km/h in 5th gear in only 8.1 seconds, making overtaking or
joining a busy motorway extremely safe...yet returns combined fuel
economy of just 4.5l/100km.
Transmissions. Astra offers a range of smooth-
shifting gearboxes, designed to complement
each engine. 1.4i and 1.3CDTi engines all come
with 5 speed manual gearboxes. 1.4i Turbo,
1.7CDTi and 2.0CDTi engines all come with
six-speed manual gearboxes. A six-speed
Automatic Gearbox with Active Select is
optional on 2.0CDTi engines.
Start/Stop diesel technology. At the cutting edge of fuel saving and
emissions reduction comes the hugely innovative new Opel Start/Stop
system which switches the engine off when you stop at the lights or in
traffic, then restarts it automatically once the clutch is depressed. A huge
range of built-in checks ensures passenger and vehicle safety at all
times, of course. Engine stop is indicated by the rev counter needle in
the AUTOSTOP position. And the system can be deactivated manually
simply by pressing the ECO button.
Start/Stop technology is standard on Astra 1.3CDTi 16v Sports Tourer.
The 95PS multi-valve engine provides strong punch with incredible
levels of just 109g/km in the Sports Tourer,
fuel economy and CO

further underlining our commitment to sustainability, fuel economy
and reductions in emissions without compromising performance and
driveability. The most powerful diesel in the Start/Stop line-up is our
2.0CDTi 16v 165PS model. Check out the model pages for individual
engine availability throughout the Astra range.
