    EtherFast Cable/DSL Router with 4-Port Switch Chapter 2: Networking Basics An Introduction to Local Area Networks Simply put, a router is a network device that connects two networks together. The Router connects your local area network (LAN), or the group of PCs in your home or office, to the Internet. The Router processes and regulates the data that travels between these two networks.

By default, the Router’s Internet Connection Type is Obtain an IP automatically (DHCP). The PC or network device obtaining an IP address is called the DHCP client. DHCP frees you from having to assign IP addresses manually every time a new user is added to your network.

DDNS lets you assign a fixed host and domain ddns (dynamic domain name system): allows the name to a dynamic Internet IP address. It is useful when you are hosting your own website, FTP server, or other hosting of a website, FTP server, or e-mail server server behind the Router.

Some ISPs will require you to register a MAC address in order to access the Internet. If you do not wish to re-register the MAC address with your ISP, you may assign the MAC address you have currently registered with your ISP to the Router with the MAC Address Clone feature.

Advanced Routing NAT is a security feature that is enabled by default. It enables the Router to translate IP addresses of your local area network to a different IP address for the Internet.

On this screen, set up filters to block specific internal users from accessing the Internet and enhance your network’s security. Filter IP Address Range You can create up to five different IP Address Range filters.
