2 CF Series Scanner: Control Panel Operations This chapter explains how to operate the CF Series Scanner from its optional control panel. If your scanner is not equipped with an control panel, the scanner is controlled through the host computer software. Refer to ScanServ User's Manual (A65352-03) for its operations.
9 Display DMA Completion Tests 7, 8, and 9 are performed only if the preview display monitor is installed. Also, all the above tests are skipped if you press any key while the firmware revision message is displayed. Any failure of these self-diagnostic tests is indicated by a flashing test number and an audible tone.
Preview Display Control Keys-Orange The orange keys, shown in Figure 2-2, are used to control the view of a scanned image on the preview display monitor. Zoom Zoom Figure 2-2 The Display Control Keys • Zoom In • Zoom Out •...

magnified when you press Zoom In. You may move the highlight bar to the left or right with the Left Arrow key or the Right Arrow key, respectively, before you press Zoom In. Refer to “Preview Display Control Procedure” on page 2-5 for more information. The Right Arrow Key The Right Arrow key moves the area shown in the preview display 3/4- window width or 768 pixels to the right.
The strip of the document that was highlighted by the reverse video bar will be enlarged to fit in the preview display monitor. 5. Make desired changes to any other scan parameters. 6. Press Zoom Out to return to the full view. The original view of the scanned image, with the reverse video highlight bar activated, is restored.
Reverse The Reverse Key The Reverse key toggles the direction of the document transport system between "forward" and "reverse." • When in the "reverse" mode, the Reverse key's red LED is continuously lit and the document transport system moves in the reverse direction-so that the document travels from the rear of the scanner toward the front.
The Auto Key Auto The Auto key toggles the scanner's automatic mode between off and on. • When this mode is on, the Auto key's red LED is continuously lit and the scanner is in automatic mode. • When off, the Auto LED is off and the scanner is in manual mode. Automatic Mode Automatic mode provides the means to load a document and ready the scanner.
Scanner Control Key - White The Scan key, colored white and shown in Figure 2-4, starts and stops the scanning process. Scan Figure 2-4 The Scanner Control Key The scanner control key works differently depending on whether the scanner is in automatic mode or manual mode. Scan The Scan Key This key toggles the scanning process between off and on.
Parameter Control Keys - Green The green keys, shown in Figure 2-5, are used to set the parameters for the scanning process. that the scanner reads in an image, but will not affect the image as output. The factory default value at start-up is positive image polarity. The primary reason to switch the polarity when scanning an image is to read an image in a different polarity than the actual document you are scanning, and this alters the amount of data that the file contains.
Resolution is measured in dots per inch (dpi), which is also referred to as pixels per inch. 1. Press Resolution once to advance to the next available resolution value. 2. Repeat Step 1 until the desired resolution value appears in the keypad display.
window size settings are sent to the scanner via Host Protocol commands- and these will always override the Size key settings. NOTE: On model CF400/36, E-size is not available so this key will only work for sizes A through D on that model. Refer to the ScanServ User's Manual for more information about how ScanServ software controls the CF Series scanner window sizes.

The Background Noise Filter is activated and the Contrast Enhancement Filter is activated at its low setting. Use this setting for scanning medium contrast, average quality documents that have obvious background speckle and/or faded image areas-that is, documents with a significant amount of gray areas or clean lines on a stained or medium contrast background.
The Background Noise Filter: for Gap Filling and Speckle Removal The Background Noise Filter (also referred to as the Binary Filter) provides Gap Filling and Speckle Removal for image data in the Binary data format. It electronically fills in gaps in faded or worn image areas and filters out the background on documents which are "dirty"...
Page 34
The active filter area is defined by neighborhood pixel groups. (A pixel is a single picture element.) These pixel groups, which may be considered separately or in combination, are shown in Figure 2-7. • 3x3 Filter Area In the 3x3 neighborhood pixel group, the eight (8) pixels surrounding the center pixel are considered when deciding whether the center pixel should be removed or filled.
Tracking The Tracking Key The Tracking key toggles the Local Area Adaptive Thresholding mode (LAT) on or off. The LAT feature determines how thresholds are applied to detect Binary data. Using LAT increases the amount of binary data collected, because the threshold level used to detect the data is automatically adjusted for changes in the local area background density.
The Lighter Key Lighter The Lighter key raises the threshold for binary data detection, one unit at a time, in the range of 0 (black) to 63 (white). Any pixel lighter than the threshold value is considered background-not part of the image. 1.
The Options Key The Options Key-Opt-is used in combination with both the Up Arrow or Down Arrow keys and the Settings Keys (A, B, C, and D) to select certain scanner options. These options include the following. 1. Data Format: GRAY(scale) or BINARY or Exit The Data Format option lets you select either Binary or 8-bit grayscale data.
The Down Arrow and Up Arrow option selection keys are colored blue and shown in Figure 2-8. Figure 2-8 Down Arrow and Up Arrow Keys NOTE: When you are not selecting options, the Down Arrow and Up Arrow keys control the document transport system. When used in this manner, the red LED in the upper left corner of each key is lit.
2. Press the Down Arrow key until the option you wish to use or set appears in the keypad display. Repeatedly pressing Down Arrow steps through the available options in sequence, as shown in Figure 2-10. 1.Data Format: BINARY A: GRAY 2.Autocalibration A: PROCEED 3.Reboot Scanner...
Page 40
To choose another option, you must press the OPT key again and the letter key of the new option. The following is a list of the available options and their possible parameter values. Data Format Option Choices The Data Format option lets you select either Binary or 8-bit grayscale data.
Page 41
The keypad display alternately shows the possible parameter values for this option: "A: PROCEED" and "Opt: Exit." • Proceed Press A to run the Autocalibration process. • Exit Press Opt to Exit selection mode without running the Autocalibration process. The following instructions explain how to run the calibration procedure. 1.
• Proceed Press A to proceed with the soft reboot. • Exit Press Opt to Exit selection mode without rebooting. This option reboots the scanner from the boot-up parameters stored in its internal memory (NVRAM). Proceeding with this option will restore the last set of parameters saved to NVRAM.
Figure 2-11 Special Document Transport Control and Echo Scan Keys The Down Arrow Key: Reverse Document Feed The Down Arrow key provides a quick method of removing a document from the scanner when you are not scanning. It can be used in either automatic or manual scanning modes.
Pressing Up Arrow lights the red LED in the upper left corner of the key, turns on the document transport system and feeds the document forward into the scanner, without actually scanning. 2. Press Up Arrow again to stop the document transport system. Alternately, you may press any other key to stop the forward document feed function.
The major advantage to Echo Scan is that you can adjust and fine tune scanning parameters at any time during the scanning process without repeatedly pressing buttons to change direction and without ever needing to unload and reload the document. WARNING: Although this feature may used while scanning on-line, the data produced will include all repeated areas, producing a large, useless file.
There are two modes of engaging the document transport system with the document-manual and automatic. Manual Mode For the manual mode, press the Scan key to start the document transport system and then gently and carefully feed the document into the scanner until the transport rollers take hold and begin to move it.
Scanning Procedure Usually, it is helpful to first scan a document off-line-that is, without host transfer of the data to determine the optimum scanning parameters. You can make use of the new Echo Scan key to make such changes more easily when scanning documents with varying image quality and contrast.
Page 48
While in Echo Scan mode, you may repeatedly change the Filter, Tracking, and Thresholding (Lighter/Darker) parameters. Be sure to record the settings for each specific document area. Refer to "The Turning Arrows Key: Echo Scan Key” on page 2-26 and "Parameter Control Keys - Green” on page 2-10 for more information.
3 CF Series Scanner: Installation and Set-Up This appendix describes all that is required to properly install the CF Series Scanner and set it up for use. Environmental Concerns The following environmental conditions must be controlled to insure acceptable working conditions for the scanner: •...
Vibration Excessive vibrations in the room should be avoided in order for the settings of the sensitive cameras to remain unchanged. Temperature The average ambient temperature of the room in which the scanner is located should be between 18C and 30C (64F-86F). The maximum ambient temperature for a non-working scanner must be between 5C and 40C (41F- 104F).
