  • Page 9: Chapter 2: Networking Basics

    Simply put, a router is a network device that connects two networks together. The Broadband Phone Adapter connects your local area network (LAN), or a group of PCs in your home, to the Internet. The Broadband Phone Adapter processes and regulates the data that travels between these two networks.
  • Page 10 A DHCP server can either be a designated PC on the network or another network device, such as the Broadband Phone Adapter. By default, the Broadband Phone Adapter’s Internet Connection Type is DHCP (obtain an IP address automatically). The PC or network device obtaining an IP address is called the DHCP client. DHCP frees you from having to assign IP addresses manually every time a new user is added to your network.

    There are two ways to place the Broadband Phone Adapter. The first way is to place the Broadband Phone Adapter horizontally on a surface. The second way is to mount the Broadband Phone Adapter on a wall. The wall-mount option is explained in further detail below.

    This appendix provides solutions to problems that may occur during the installation and operation of the Broadband Phone Adapter. Read the description below to solve your problems. If you can’t find an answer here, check the Qwest Web site at www.qwest.com/mybroadbandphone or the Linksys Web site at www.linksys.com.
  • Page 42 The Broadband Phone Adapter, by default, assigns an IP address range of 192.168.0.100 to 192.168.0.150 using the DHCP server on the Broadband Phone Adapter. To set a static IP address, you can only use the ranges 192.168.0.2 to 192.168.0.99 and 192.168.0.151 to 192.168.0.254. Each PC or network device that uses TCP/IP must have a unique address to identify itself in a network.
