    Alex™ eReader DS-10 1. Getting Started This section reviews all of the physical features of the Alex™ eReader and covers the basics of using the Alex eReader buttons. On the front of your Alex eReader are the EPD (Electronic Paper Display) on top, the LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) on the bottom, and the navigational buttons.

    1. Getting Started Touch Screen LCD The Alex eReader has a 3.5” full color, touch screen LCD. The touch screen LCD allows you to interact with the Alex eReader in natural and instinctive ways with the touch of your fi nger, like many other mobile devices, such as smart phones.

LCD timeout After the LCD has dimmed, if there is another period of inactivity, the touch screen automatically turns off .

    1. Getting Started System updates When a new system image is available, the Alex eReader downloads it automatically in the background. Alex prompts you to update the system after the system image is downloaded. The system update does not aff ect your data. The Alex eReader checks to see if a new system image is available for system update after the network connectiv- ity is turned on for the fi rst time.

    2. Home Screen 2. Home Screen Home screen overview The Home screen on the LCD is your starting point for using the applications on your Alex eReader. Status bar Simply touch an icon to use the application it represents. Wherever you are and whatever you’re doing on the Alex LCD screen, simply long press to return to the Home screen.

    3. Settings 3. Settings The Settings screen on the LCD allows you to set a variety of control parameters for your Alex. To select this screen, touch the Settings icon on the Home screen.   • Page 24 Alex™ eReader DS-10 Wi-Fi settings screen Open the Wi-Fi settings screen by selecting Wi-Fi settings on the Wireless controls screen.  To view and scan for available networks, long press then select Scan.  To connect to a network, select it from the network list. Pro- vide your username or password if required.

    3. Settings mate signal strength by the number of bands that light up.     Alex™ eReader DS-10 To scan manually for available Wi-Fi networks, from the Wi-Fi set- tings screen, long press , and then touch Scan. Touch another Wi-Fi network to connect to it. Note If the wireless network you want to connect to is not in the list of detected networks, scroll down the screen, then touch Add Wi-Fi network.
  • Page 27 3. Settings  LCD timeout: To set the amount of time the LCD must be inactive before the LCD screen turns off , use this setting. LCD timeout length includes LCD dimming time, so make sure the duration you set is longer than that of the LCD dim timeout setting.

    Alex™ eReader DS-10 Note LCD timeout and LCD dim timeout are designed to reduce power consumption by the LCD, but you can continue reading on the EPD and navigate through the reading material with the PREVIOUS PAGE and NEXT PAGE buttons.

Connect at least four dots.  Use visible pattern: Select this check box to make the pattern visible as you draw it on the screen. Clear the Use visible pattern check box if you do not want the unlock pattern to display on the screen when you unlock it.

  • Page 34 Alex™ eReader DS-10 Register/Deregister Turn on Wi-Fi. In home screen, touch Settings > About your eReader Touch Register. Enter your Spring ID and password, and touch Sign in. If you don’t have a Spring ID, select Not a member. You can then apply for one.

    5. Library Using My Collections To use the collections in the Library, touch My Collections on the Library main screen. My Collections allows you to ac- cess and organize your eBooks in the collections predefi ned by the Alex Reader, and to create and organize collections of your own.

The Add New Collection option moves to the bottom of the list after you add a new collection. Modifying a collection To modify the title and icon of a collection you have cre- ated, follow these steps.

    Alex™ eReader DS-10 Change the collection’s title and touch Next. Then select a new icon. Select Save. When Alex confi rms the successful modifi cation, touch OK. Deleting a Collection To delete a collection that you have created, follow these steps.

Deleting a collection merely removes their asso- ciation with the deleted collection title. Removing a book from a collection To remove an eBook from a collection, follow these steps. Select the collection from the My Collections screen.

The Authors screen lists each author and the number of diff erent titles by that author in your Library. (It also lists periodical titles and the number of issues of each.)

    Alex™ eReader DS-10 Searching for eBooks in the Alex Library You can search for the title or author of an eBook using the Input text box at the top of these screens: Library, My Collections, Titles, and Authors. Follow these steps: Touch the Input text box to pop up the keyboard.

The cover of the book (or a graphic of the fi le format), title, au- thor, and publishing date, if available, appear on the screen. Touch the Input text box at the top of the screen to pop up the keyboard. Type in the word or phrase, and select Done. Touch the Search icon in the Menu bar at the top of the LCD screen.

    5. Library The Alex eReader Dictionary The Alex Dictionary allows you to look up the meanings of words as you’re reading your eBook. Using the Dictionary To use the Alex Dictionary, follow these steps. Select the Dictionary icon on the Toolbar. The LCD dis- plays the text of the eBook page you are reading on the EPD.

    Alex™ eReader DS-10 6. Browser The Browser is a full-featured web browser with dual screen functionality using Spring Design’s patented “Touch and Project” concept. When using the Browser, the LCD is pri- marily used for easy navigation through various Web pages, and the EPD is used for reading the content of the Web pages.
