Rambler Instructions
Thank you for purchasing a Carr Rambler amplifier. The Rambler employs a pure and
simple classic 60s American style preamp circuit combined with an output section owing
more to the early 50s. This unique blending yields very open and rich clean tones with mild
overdrive. You will find the Rambler works very well with pedals – staying dimensional and
bringing out the best from your guitar. Please take time to familiarize yourself with this
manual.
Volume – Adjusts the loudness of the amplifier.
Treble – Varies the top end from dark to bright.
Middle – Varies the mid frequencies and is very influential in taking the tone from a 60's
blackface sound (minimum to 11 o'clock) to a pushed tweed mid sound (11 o'clock to full).
Bass – Varies the low end from lean to full. To retain clarity, turn the Bass down at higher
volumes.
Reverb – Controls the amount of reverb sound from none to deep and lush.
Tremolo Depth and Speed – Depth controls the intensity of the Tremolo swell from none
to deep. The Speed control affects the rate of the Tremolo pulse. You may hear some pulsing
noise when you are not playing while the Tremolo is on. This is a normal effect of the late
50s style output tube bias Tremolo we use. The Tremolo can be turned on and off using the
footswitch included with the Rambler. The jack for the footswitch is on the bottom of the
chassis between the third and forth preamp tubes (see Chassis Diagram).
Triode/Pentode Switch – Changes the way the output tubes operate. Pentode sounds loud
and punchy with great headroom while Triode is more vintage and warm with very thick
midrange. The Pentode mode is the Rambler's full power setting, producing 28 watts. The
Triode mode makes 14 watts. Switch the amp to Standby (see Standby below) before
changing the Triode/Pentode switch.
Standby – Set the amp to Standby (switch baton down) before turning on the power switch
(see On-Off-On below). After 1 minute of warm up, switch the Standby baton up. The amp
is ready to be played. Using the Standby switch every time the amp is turned on will prolong
tube life. Use the standby switch before changing between triode and pentode modes (see
Triode/Pentode switch above).
On – Off – On – Selects between two ON positions and the OFF position (middle). The two
ON's are wired in opposite phase of each other. If you receive a shock from another piece of
