    The battery is not charged at shipment. Charge the battery before use. Place the battery in the charger. Insert the battery into the supplied battery charger as shown, making sure that the battery is in the correct orientation. Plug the charger in. The charging indicator will light.

    After charging the battery, insert it in the camera as described below. Open the battery-chamber cover. Note Be sure the camera is off before opening the battery-chamber cover. Cautions • Do not turn the camera on or off while the battery-chamber cover is open.

Removing the Battery After turning the camera off , open the battery- chamber cover, press the battery latch to the side, and slide the battery out of the camera as shown.
  • Page 18 Although the camera can store pictures in internal memory, SD memory cards (sold separately) can be used to store additional pictures. When no memory card is inserted, appears in the monitor and internal memory is used for recording and playback. Note that because camera malfunction could cause internal memory to become corrupted, the pictures in internal memory should periodically be transferred to a computer and saved on the computer hard disk or on removable media such as CDs or DVDs.

    Intelligent Face Detection allows the camera to automatically detect human faces and set focus and exposure for a face anywhere in the frame for shots that emphasize portrait subjects. Choose for group portraits to prevent the camera from focusing on the background. Intelligent Face Detection also off ers a red-eye removal option for removing “red-eye”...

    When the fl ash is used, the camera’s such factors as the brightness of the subject, its position in the frame, and its distance from the camera. Flash output and sensitivity are adjusted to ensure that the main subject is correctly exposed while preserving the eff ects of ambient background lighting, even in dimly-lit indoor scenes.

    Red-Eye Removal When S is selected for Intelligent Face Detection (pg. 21), red-eye removal (S) is available in AUTO (V), fi ll fl ash (U), and slow sync (Z) modes. Red-eye removal minimizes “ ” caused when light from the fl ash is refl ected from the subject’s retinas as shown in the illustration at right.

    The camera off ers four types of self-timer mode, which enable group portraits, self-portraits and reduction of camera shake.
