ViewPoint 64 System Installer/User Guide Chapter 3: Operation You’ll operate the Viewpoint 64 system using OSCAR (On-Screen Configuration and Activity Reporting). The OSCAR GUI enables you to set up, view information about, and operate the servers in your Viewpoint system.
Chapter 3: Operation • 17 ViewPoint 64 System Installer/User Guide Logging In and Logging Out When security mode is active, log into OSCAR as an authorized user. You can then access the OSCAR Selection screen. Your system administrator will assign you a user name and password.
This screen is called the status flag. It can be set to show the connection by port number or by name. When operating the Viewpoint 64 system with OSCAR, the status flag disappears from the display and reappears when the operation is completed.

Chapter 3: Operation • 19 ViewPoint 64 System Installer/User Guide Changing Status Flag Attributes You can choose to display the status flag at all times, for a few seconds after switching, or not at all. You can also change the color of the status flag and its location on the screen. The table, Values and Effect on Flag Appearance, describes the available menu attributes.
ViewPoint 64 System Installer/User Guide Switching to a Computer The most common Viewpoint 64 operation is either switching a user’s keyboard, mouse and monitor or just the monitor (video) between computers. Switching disconnects either the keyboard, mouse, and monitor from one computer and connects them to another or it disconnects only the video signal when the user is in watch mode.
Chapter 3: Operation • 21 ViewPoint 64 System Installer/User Guide NOTE: If you press the wrong number (Computer is selected by default), enter the number of the desired computer. If you press ENTER instead of selecting a port number, you will be disconnected from the server you are connected to.
Querying Pod Status You can check the connection status of any user pod or system pod in the Viewpoint 64 system. This may be useful when you want “full” connection (control of keyboard and mouse) to a computer and need to determine if another user is already connected.
Chapter 3: Operation • 23 ViewPoint 64 System Installer/User Guide Press ENTER to display your own switch status —or— press the number key that corresponds to the console or computer you want to query; the Query Pod Connection screen appears with pod number selected.
Security Mode Inactive Security Mode Active Advanced computer applications should usually be protected against unauthorized users. Viewpoint 64’s security features enable you to lock the keyboard and monitor, requiring you to type a password before resuming operation. You can also set a time delay before the console is locked.
Chapter 3: Operation • 25 ViewPoint 64 System Installer/User Guide NOTE: The factory default password is OSCAR. Because the CAPS LOCK is disabled in OSCAR, you must hold down the SHIFT key as you type each letter. If you are changing your password, type your new password in the New password field and press ENTER.
NOTE: If changes to settings make video unreadable, press ESC to return to previous settings. Changing Menu Attributes It is not necessary to change any of the default settings before using Viewpoint 64; however, you can set several options to suit your preferences or specific application. For example, you may want to change the position, color, and other display attributes of the OSCAR screens.

In lieu of computers, you can connect Viewpoint 64 to other Apex switching devices, such as the OutLook concentrator. This is called tiering. In order for tiering to work, Viewpoint 64 must be made aware of the external device first in order to transmit commands, and the external device must be able to read and execute those commands.
