Troubleshooting Adding another Wire: Option #1 This a common problem when replacing a mechanical thermostat or a thermostat powered by batteries. Older thermostats require four wires, but newer more sophisticated thermostats require a fth wire. This wire is known as the “Common” wire and powers the digital display.
