    Environmental Factors Heat and moisture can harm your Gibson RIP. Please do not install or operate this product near sources of moisture, such as sinks, damp basements, leaky roofs, etc. and never store it near heat sources, such as heaters or radiators.

    Warranty Protection It is very important to us that you are satisfied with your Gibson product. Register it and activate your warranty protection by mailing the warranty card included with Dark Fire to Gibson USA, Department W, P.O. Box 100087, Nashville, TN 37210-0087. If you encounter any kind of problem, contact us as soon as possible so we can make things right.

  • Page 5 1. Insert the installation DVD into your Intel-based or PPC Mac (note: this is a hybrid DVD that works with both Windows and Mac). 2. Double-click on the DVD's icon. The installer window appears. 3. Click on the Gibson RIP icon in the installer window, and drag it into the Applications icon.
  • Page 6 Step 2: Install Native Instruments Guitar Rig 3 Please note: To authorize Guitar Rig 3, your computer must be connected to the internet. 1. From the main installation window, double-click on the Install Guitar Rig 3 icon. 2. Enter your computer's password. 3.
  • Page 7 4. If you click on Continue, click on Agree to indicate your acceptance of the license terms. 5. Select Guitar Rig's destination. The default is the Applications folder; we strongly recommend you leave this as the destination. Click on Continue.
  • Page 8 6. Click on Install. 7. The installation process begins, with a bar showing the progress. If any error messages appear, quit the installation and repeat the steps under “Step 1: Prepare Your Computer.” 8. After installation is complete, you need to authorize Guitar Rig 3 via Native Instruments' Service Center program.
  • Page 9 9. As in step 5, you can specify a destination for the Service Center program. The default is the Applications folder; we strongly recommend you leave this as the destination. Click on Continue. 10. When a screen shows that the software was successfully installed, click on Quit. There may also be another window that indicates Guitar Rig 3 was successfully installed.
  • Page 10 Guitar Rig 3. Enter this number. 16. Once entered, click on “Activate.” If you need to enter your computer's password again, do so. 17. The window will show that Guitar Rig 3 Dark Fire is activated. Click on Exit, and installation is complete.
  • Page 11 Step 3: Install Ableton Live 1. From the Installer window, double-click on Install Ableton Live. 2. When the Installation welcome screen appears, click on Continue. 3. The Software License screen appears. If you agree with the terms, click on Continue. 4.
  • Page 12 5. Choose the installation destination. The default is the Applications folder; we strongly recommend you leave this as the destination. Click on Continue. 6. When the Easy Install screen appears, click on Install.
  • Page 13 7. You will need to enter your password, Enter it, then click on OK. 8. The program installs. 9. When a window appears that says “The software was successfully installed,” click on Close. Ableton Live is now installed.
  • Page 14 3. When the “Thank you” screen appears, click on OK—Ableton Live is now authorized. 4. If you're asked whether you want to install Gibson Dark Fire templates, make sure click on Yes. After these are installed, installation is complete—click on OK, and you're done.
  • Page 15 If the firmware is not up to date, the following window appears. 1. Click “Yes” to install new firmware. Do not turn off or unplug your Gibson RIP or your computer while the firmware is being installed! This can leave RIP in a non-functional state that requires returning it to the factory.
  • Page 16 4. The next window asks you to connect the guitar to the RIP with a stereo cable. Plug your Dark Fire guitar into RIP with the included stereo cable, then click on Continue. 5. Pull up on the MCK (Master Control Knob) and strum the guitar a few times until it's in tune.
  • Page 17 5. A window appears that asks if you want to flash your RIP. Click “Yes” to install the firmware. Do not turn off or unplug your Gibson RIP or your computer while the firmware is being installed! This can leave RIP in a non-functional state that requires returning it to the factory.
  • Page 18 9. You will be asked if you want to write the current firmware to your guitar. Click on Yes. 10. A window appears that asks you to connect the guitar to the RIP with a stereo cable. Plug your Dark Fire guitar into RIP with the included stereo cable, then click on Continue.
  • Page 19 11. Pull up on the MCK (Master Control Knob) and strum the guitar a few times until it is in tune. For more information on tuning, refer to the manual on Dark Fire's tuning options that's posted online. Keep the MCK knob pulled out, then click on Continue.

    Appendix A: Troubleshooting If you have difficulty installing any of the Gibson suite of software on the Macintosh, aside from obvious problems (e.g., RIP AC adapter not plugged in) you may need to repair your Mac's permissions and/or update your Mac's operating system software.
  • Page 21 Install. Otherwise, click on Quit. If you are asked to restart the computer after the update is complete, do so. 7. Repeat steps 1-4 to repair permissions after the updates are installed. Your computer is now prepared to install the Dark Fire software suite.
