If you are looking for more information, you can use your favorite search engine to find information on the internet. Suffice to say, there is plenty. Basic Router Concepts Even though the amount of bandwidth in your local area network (LAN) can be provided easily and relatively inexpensively, the price of the connection to the internet is much higher.

  • Page 115 Appendix Netmask The partition scheme that separates the different address classes is used to identify a netmask attached to the IP address. A netmask is a 32-bit quantity that, in logical com- bination (using an AND operator) with an IP address, forms the network address. The netmasks for Class A, B and C are for instance 255.0.0.0, 255.255.0.0 and 255.255.255.0.

  • Page 117 Appendix The IP address shortage The Internet has grown larger than anyone ever imagined it could be. Although the exact size is unknown, the current estimate is that there are about 100 million hosts and more than 350 million users actively on the Internet. • Page 119 Appendix MAC Addresses and Address Resolution Protocol An IP address alone cannot be used to deliver data from one LAN device to another. To send data between LAN devices, you must convert the IP address of the destination device to its media access control (MAC) address. Each device on an Ethernet network has a unique MAC address, which is a 48-bit number assigned to each device by the manufacturer.
