Thanks for responding to my inquiry, but how do you use it? When I press the speaker icon while in intercom mode, nothing happens. Is there another step I need to take?

To use the Uniden DCX170 intercom feature, initiate an intercom call from one handset to another or to the base. If pressing the speaker icon does not work, ensure that the handset is properly registered and that both handsets are in DirectLink mode if required.
