  • Page 12 Commercial In Confidence 1.3.4 G-Switch Battery Chemistry The G-Switch battery consists of 5 x AA Rechargeable Nickel Metal Hydride Cells with PositiveThermal Coefficient (P.T.C.) fuse. INSTALLATION LOCATIONS Installation Because of the critical nature of an ELT, it is important that the installation be performed according to the following instruction and guidelines as laid down in RTCA DO 182.
  • Page 13 Commercial In Confidence G-Switch Mounting Location The G-Switch is co-located with the ELT in the same racking. Remote Control Switch The remote control switch should be located in the cockpit within easy reach of the aircrew, such that they can test the ELT and switch it to ON in an emergency. The switch has been designed to fit into existing DZUS fasteners, if available.
  • Page 14 Commercial In Confidence 3.1.1 A0637 The mounting tray is designed to meet the requirements of a fixed ELT but, if the need arises, the ELT can be withdrawn from the tray and used as a portable unit. No tools are required to separate the ELT from the tray and G- Switch. The mounting tray must be installed in a position that meets the requirements by having secure attachment points that will survive an incident.
  • Page 15 Commercial In Confidence Battery Installation 3.2.1 ELT Battery A0673-1 Take the ‘O’ ring supplied with the battery out of its bag and carefully install it around the connector spigot in the ELT, ensuring it is fully seated. Install the battery into the ELT by sliding it in until the side locks snap into position.
  • Page 16 Commercial In Confidence The antenna 10-274-1 is the ELT antenna which is stowed with the A0367 mounting rack such that it is to hand when that installation is broken down to provide a portable ELT system. This antenna is shown at Figure 33. Interface Unit The interface unit is suitable for mounting into any convenient position that will allow the inter-unit wiring to pick up GPS information and feed it into the ELT - remote switch...
  • Page 17 Commercial In Confidence INSTALLED SYSTEM TESTING Test Equipment The system, once installed, should be tested to ensure that the control of the ELT is effective from the G-Switch and the remote control switch. No special to type test equipment is required since under the built in test facility an audible tone verifies a serviceable system.
  • Page 18 Commercial In Confidence Remote Control Switch The remote switch has an indicator lamp which repeats the tone and beep in visual form. The guarded switch can be pressed to Test / Reset which will initiate a self test. The in-built sounder and lamp indicate the tone signals and beep. The same switch when pressed down switches the ELT to ON and transmission will begin.
  • Page 19 Commercial In Confidence The ON position of the ARM/OFF/ON switch on the G-Switch over-rides all the other inputs: • It by-passes all other inputs including ‘INHIBIT’. • It does not carry out a BIT. • It does not wait for GPS and therefore does not encode a GPS position. •...
  • Page 20 Commercial In Confidence Ensure that the old ‘O’ ring is removed from the connector spigot when the old battery is removed and that the new ‘O’ ring supplied with the new battery is in place on the connector spigot before re-assembly. The replacement battery is slid into the housing and pressed fully home.
  • Page 21 Commercial In Confidence If the ELT is left switched to ARM at the end of a flight and aircraft power switched OFF then the G-Switch battery maintains G-Switch functionality before becoming discharged. To prevent overly discharging the G-Switch battery, the G-Switch should be selected to OFF if aircraft 28Vdc supply to the ELT will be unavailable for periods exceeding 8 hours.
