If DHCP is not enabled, multiple storage arrays connecting to a
network will default to the same management IP address, causing IP
address duplication errors. To fix this problem, add each storage array
to the network individually and change its IP addresses to non-default
values before adding another storage array.
Always use auto-negotiation when configuring the Ethernet
management ports. In MD Storage Manager Physical pane, right click
on the RAID controller module and select Configure > Management
Ports and choose Auto-negotiate from the Speed and duplex mode
drop-down menu.
Use the ping command to contact the Ethernet management port.
Unless the ping command originates from a management station on a
separate, non-networked switch, it should indicate whether the port is
connected or disconnected.
If you are using DHCP and have configured static IP addresses
previously, those static IP addresses will override the default
addresses. To fix this issue, manually reconfigure the management
ports.
The Ethernet management ports on the MD storage array are also
accessible using the IPv6 link local addresses determined by the MAC
address of the port (unless it is has been disabled).
If the DHCP server does not respond, default IP addresses will auto-
configure following a three-minute timeout. This timeout interval
starts either when the RAID controller module boots up or a new
Ethernet management port connection is established.
Dell recommends that you do not configure more than one NIC per
host on the same subnet. Multiple NICs on the same subnet can cause
IP address confusion, especially in direct-attached configurations. It is
always preferable to isolate management data traffic from storage
array-to-host server traffic on separate subnets and multiple NICs. In
addition to avoiding performance slowdowns, this configuration is
easier to manage and troubleshoot.
The Ethernet management ports on the MD-series storage arrays do
not support VLAN tagging. Make sure that tagging is disabled on the
network switch for any port connected to the Ethernet management
port(s).
