2. The following words “Attention!” and “Please Note!” are often used in the following chapters and carry the following meaning. Attention Special functions, information, instructions or restrictions for the protection of persons, materials and the prevention of accidents. On seeing this word there is a possibility of personal injury or damage. Please read the paragraph closely and pass on the information to all other persons.
Page 13
Children, teenagers or other persons who are not familiar with the Instruction Manual must never use the Flail-Mower. Attention ! The carrying of persons on the Flail-Mower is not permitted even without the motor running. No one should stand on the Flail-Mower without the Flail-Mower being suitably supported.
Traffic Regulations As soon as the fitted Flail-Mower ventures onto the public roads it must comply with the relevant National Road Regulations. Tractors with fitted Flail-Mower must be checked before entering onto a public road in respect to weight and axle loads. Attention If the Flail-Mower is fitted on the rear, the front axle might be under loaded and require an additional front weight fitted.
Safety and Accident Prevention The majority of accidents that happen during working, transport, fitting, removal and servicing are a consequence of ignoring the most elementary rules. Therefore it is necessary that all persons who are to use the Flail-Mower, whether they be the buyer, a family member, an employee or from an external source must fully understand the following safety rules, recognise the warning signs fitted to the machine and follow the safety instructions to the letter.
Page 16
Before engaging the Flail-Mower`s drive and during use always ensure that the danger area behind the Flail-Mower is clear. Please give special consideration to children. Attention Danger from flying parts or foreign objects! Inform all persons that you are about to engage the drive to the Flail- Mower and that the danger area of 80m behind the Flail-Mower is clear.
Page 17
Before beginning any work, always place the Flail-Mower on the ground, disengage the drive, turn the tractor off, remove the key and ensure all turning parts have come to a standstill. When working or inspecting the Flail-Mower ensure that it is not possible for the machine to be turned on.

3. Useful information for Mowing Work Mowing is a method of cutting vegetation, which combines several processes in one with the reduction of the vegetation which is to remain on the ground in an energy, work and cost saving way. This provides quick rotting and composting of the biological substance ensuring the re-circulation of the nutrients directly into the soil leading to an additional build up of humus.
Page 21
force. The feature of this flail is that noticeably more flails of this type would be required for the same amount of work. Due to the different number of cutting flails required for the “M” Hammer Please Note! Flail and the ”L” Flail different rotor shafts must be installed for each flail type.
Shredding bars usage The number and shape of shredding bars fitted define the level to which the vegetation is to be mulched. Important features influencing the mowing levels are the shape of the housing with the fixed cutting edges/impact bars as well as permanent or removable U-shaped fixed shredding bars in combination with the active cutting circle and rotational speed of the cutting shaft and cutting flails.
Engaging P.T.O. Before engaging the P.T.O. of the Flail-Mower please check that the Flail-Mower is securely mounted, that all of the safety devices are fitted and that you are certain that nobody is in the danger area (80m behind the Flail-Mower). Please remember to keep sufficient distance between you and all rotating parts and to keep this safe distance until you are sure that all of the components have come to a complete stand still.
Page 24
It is therefore important that the height of the Flail-Mower is so adjusted that it sits parallel to the ground, hence not tilting forwards or backwards. If the Flail-Mower is not sitting parallel to the ground then the effectiveness of the work will suffer and even cause damage to the ground and roots.
4. Operation Your Müthing Flail-Mower will have been handed over to you by our sales partner in a fully assembled condition and will be ready for use. You will also be provided with instruction in its use Below you will find the essential information for the check list, the controls, settings and for working with the Flail-Mower.
Installation of optionals and modifications These notes will explain to you which optionals may be fitted and which conversions are permissible. The Müthing-Flail-Mower MU-H is equipped with a multi position Head Stock Cat. I + II for front and rear mounting with mechanical side shift. (Hydraulic side shift optional, one double acting hydraulic connector needed.) Moreover the MU-H is available with a fixed Head Stock for front and rear mounting, mountable in different positions.
Mounting operations on to tractor / vehicle Select a suitable tractor for the Flail-Mower and ensure that the maximum power allowed is not exceeded. Attention Please note the maximum tractor power is allowed for the Flail-Mower. If a more powerful tractor is used, the damage caused will not be covered by the warranty.
Installation of P.T.O. drive A P.T.O. shaft is normally included with the sale of a Müthing-Flail-Mower. If you already own a P.T.O. shaft and wish to use it, or you wish to use a P.T.O. supplied at a later date, please note that only P.T.O.
Hydraulics The side shift of the Flail-Mower MUH is always done manually. Optional a hydraulical shifting device can be delivered. This requires one double acting hydraulic connector. When connecting the hydraulic hoses, remove from the holders provided, remove the protective caps and correctly fit to the tractor's hydraulic couplings.
General checks and service information The majority of the following points have already been covered. More detailed information is covered in the following chapters about servicing and maintaining the Flail-Mower such as grease points and schedule, oil and grease qualities and tensioning of the drive belts. The following check list is immediately to be done: Any damages noted must be immediately reported to the manufacturer in writing! Any warning signs missing must be reported as in no.
Page 31
Attention If during the test run any abnormal sounds or movements are heard, such as vibrations, clattering etc. turn the Flail-Mower off immediately and contact us or a specialised workshop. Attention Please remember to re-tension the drive belts no later than thirty minutes after their initial use (Drive belts usually stretch after their initial use) and after one hour's use ensure that all nuts and bolts are secure (retighten where required).
Transport of the Flail-Mower Before transporting the Flail-Mower ensure that the Flail-Mower has been correctly fitted and that the Flail-Mower is in the middle position, centrally located between the tractor wheels so that the centre of gravity of the tractor is not impaired and the Flail-Mower is not protruding from the sides. Please take special care that the tractor lights are not obscured by the Flail-Mower which will not happen when the Flail-Mower is transported in the middle position.
Operational setting The cutting height is defined by the setting of the side or rear mounted support rollers/wheels. The optimal cutting height is 6-8cm, which corresponds to the middle hole on the side plate for securing the support roller/wheels. The lower hole should be used when cutting dense material or driving at higher speeds.
Page 34
Remove the upper pulley from the P.T.O.. Repeat the above procedure to remove the lower drive pulley Exchange the upper pulley with the lower pulley and locate on their new respective positions. Refit both bushes and secure the bolts to a torque setting of ( manufacturer's value of 90Nm) To ensure that the bushes are properly seated use a plastic or wooden hammer (to prevent damage to the pulley) to knock the pulley.
Operational Instructions Never start work with the Flail-Mower unless all protective devices are fitted and fully functional on both the Flail-Mower and the P.T.O.. Check that that all connecting bolts are secured by a split pin or Lynch pin. Make sure that all plate guards, covers or chain guards are complete and fully functional. Before starting work slowly lower the Flail-Mower from the transport position and carefully place on the ground and into the working position.
Page 36
Take special care of objects such as large stones, curb stones, tree stumps, plastic sacks and debris which could lie on the ground and cause an obstruction. These objects could cause a blockage of the rotor and subsequent damage to the Flail-Mower and/or cause a dangerous situation.
Demounting the Flail-Mower Before putting the Flail-Mower away at the end of a working session, be sure to give the Flail-Mower a good wash down in a suitable place and then spray with a suitable preserving substance or preserving oil. Always grease the bearings and the other grease points as recommended in the lubrication schedule and check that grease extrudes from the appropriate grease points.
5. Cleaning, Servicing and Maintenance Through regular cleaning, servicing and maintenance the life of the Flail-Mower can be considerably extended and the reliability and quality of the cut will also be improved. The responsibility for carrying out thorough and regular servicing lies in your hands. ...
General Service Information Tasks that belong to the general service and which should be regularly carried out are: Checking and greasing of the bearings, support rollers, the rotor and all other moving components at the indicated greasing points. (See Lubrication and Maintenance Schedule) Checking for damage from foreign objects or other obstructions as well as removing cable or strips of plastic which have wrapped themselves around the rotor or support wheels/roller.

Page 41
Cutting Flails Conversion If the cutting flails are to be exchanged (M type or L type) the Flail-Mower must be placed on the ground, removeed from the tractor, raised using a suitable machine and supported and secured using a suitable stand. If such a suitable stand is not available please let the work be carried out by a fully equipped specialised workshop.
Tensioning and replacing the drive belt A drive belt is generally included in the drive chain of all products in the Müthing range. The elastic properties of the drive belt reduce the effects of sudden peak loads such as are experienced when starting, meeting foreign objects or the force required to reduce large qualities of dense material.
Page 43
New drive belts have a tendency to stretch after initial use. The amount varies with their quality. It is therefore necessary to check the tension regularly after first use. Thereafter the inspection interval can be extended to the normal period. Please note! After the initial fitting the drive belt tension should be checked after 30 minutes work.
Oil Level Check and Oil Change The gearbox fitted to your Flail-Mower and the extension drive shaft mounted between the gearbox and drive belts are lubricated by oil. The extension drive shaft is fitted to all Flail-Mowers which are not fitted with a direct drive to the gearbox-drive belts.
Page 45
Topping up Oil in the Gearbox: Lower the Flail-Mower and remove the Flail-Mower from the tractor. Use the support feet to level the Flail-Mower. Remove the oil level check plug from the side of the gearbox. (Place a container under the gearbox to catch any oil leakage).
Overhaul Work As well as carrying out the maintenance tasks listed it is also essential to check that the plate guards or chain guards and the rudder guard are regularly checked to make sure that they are intact, damage free and fully functional. The plate guards or the double chain guard mounted at the front of the Flail-Mower prevent objects from flying out towards the driver.
Page 47
In the event that welding work is to be carried out on the Flail-Mower when fitted to the tractor, please do not forget to remove the alternator and battery first to prevent possible damage. Always use the correct flails, suitable working footwear and clothing and, where necessary, wear gloves.
