Frequent Asked Questions
Is the Dynatrap noisy?
NO, the unit is whisper-quiet and the only sound is from the built-in fan, which is equivalent to a computer fan.
What attracts mosquitos?
Dynatrap produces carbon dioxide which is the same gas exhaled by humans during respiration and it's the primary source of attraction for mosquitos.
How soon should my Dynatrap begin to control mosquitoes and other flying insects?
The trap will begin to catch immediately if there is mosquito activity in the area.
Can I use the unit outside?
YES, you may use the unit outside or inside. For best results place the Dynatrap in a dark location away from any competing light source.
How do I install the Dynatrap?
- Unpack Unit. Save carton for off-season storage
- If hanging or mounting the unit, place approximately 5 – 6 feet above the floor/ground level for optional catch rate and easy access for cleaning
- If hanging, attach the chain (supplied with the unit) to the ring on the top of the DT1100. Secure the chain to a properly installed eye bolt or other holding device.
- If mounting the unit to a wall, install the mounting bracket to the side of the DT1100. This bracket slides into side wall of the DT1100.
- Plug cord into an outdoor outlet or UL listed extension cord.
- For best catch results leave unit on at all times, except when cleaning or servicing.
- Catch rate activity will be higher at night. For best catch results it is recommended to keep the unit away from competing light sources. Intended for household use only.
Where should I place the Dynatrap?
The Dynatrap will provide 1/2 acre of protection within the yard. You may place near the house, or place on a sturdy tree branch. In addition, you may place the Dynatrap indoors, or in the garage to trap insects from flying into the house.
How high off the ground should the Dynatrap be installed?
The Dynatrap can be placed, fixed, or hung, on any external object, wall, verandah post, tree or ceiling in the area to be protected. Hang or mount unit at least 5–6 feet above floor/ground level. The unit should not be hung by the electrical cord as it may break and cause electrical hazard. It should be hung by the chain link included with the unit.
How many traps should I buy for around my house?
This depends on the size of your property. Generally we recommend two or three traps depending on the number and location of mosquito breeding areas on your property.
I have many bugs coming in my house from the garage. Can I use one there?
YES, since the trap is designed to be used indoors and outdoors, many people have been very successful by placing a unit in their garage (it can be hung and connected next to the garage door opener), thus catching every insect coming in and stopping them from entering the house.
Does it attract other insects?
The Dynatrap effectively attracts and captures a wide range of insects including mosquitos, flies, bees, stinkbugs, and moths.
It has recently rained, will the mosquitoes return?
This is possible if you are contributing to their breeding environment. The perfect breeding grounds around your home for mosquitoes are any areas where there is stagnant water, for example:
- Clogged Gutters
- Drain Outlets from Air Conditioners
- Dripping Out Faucets
- Old Tires
- Children's Wading Pools
- Small Decorative Ponds and Fountains
- Over Irrigated and Poorly Drained Lawns
- Saucers under Potted Plants
- Tree Stumps and Tree Holes
- Water Cans and Buckets
- Wheelbarrows
Plants, like Bromeliads are another perfect environment for breeding mosquitoes.

What type of bulbs do I need to use as replacements?
Recommended bulb replacement for the DT1100 is a 7-watt UV (ultra violet) fluorescent bulb. Dynatrap does have replacement bulbs available at the retailer you purchase from or available at our online store.
How do I replace the bulbs?
The light bulb should be replaced regularly to ensure optimal UV effectiveness.
Even though the bulb's light may be visible to you, its ability to attract insects diminishes over time.
- Turn power switch to "off" position. UNPLUG UNIT, and allow bulb to cool before replacing.
- Remove retaining cage, and turn unit upside down.
- Remove the four screws securing the fan housing to the light housing. After removing the screws, gently pull the fan housing away from the light housing. Using a soft brush, remove dirt and debris from the light housing. Once the cleaning process has been completed, untighten the screw securing the base of the light bulb to the light housing. Slide the metal bracket to the side. Cover the bulb with a cloth to protect your finger and hand. Grasp the bulb (with your hand and fingers protected by the cloth) and gently pull the bulb from the socket.
- Remove any debris from the lamp socket with a brush before inserting the new bulb. Replace the metal plate over the base of the bulb and tighten the retaining screw.
- Align the screw holes in the fan housing with the screw holes in the lighting unit and tighten the screws to the base of the lighting unit.
- Replace the retaining cage at the bottom of the unit.
Should I leave the Dynatrap plugged in all of the time?
Yes, the Dynatrap should be left on 24 hours a day 7 days week (except when cleaning).
How long is the cord?
The cord is 10 feet long. If an extension cord is needed the extension cord must be marked with letters "W-A" and with a tag stating "Suitable for Use with Outdoor Appliances".
How often do I need to empty the retaining cage?
It will depend on your region and time of the year how often you need to empty the unit. The screened material around the retaining cage will allow you to see if you have the need to empty and clean the collection chamber. Frequent cleaning will prolong the life of the unit, and provide for efficient trapping operations. We recommend a once a week cleaning.
