Preparing your system

Unboxing your new product

  • Unpack your system from the box
You can recycle all packaging and reuse the plastic bags
  • Choose an optimal location
We recommend placing your system in a cool area, away from direct sunlight.
  • Soak the Mineral Stones and Alkalinity Enhancers
The zazen Mineral Stones (grey/blue stones) and zazen Alkalinity Enhancers must be soaked in water for 48 hours prior to assembling your system.
    • The stones are natural and will release mineral dust initially, which makes the water taste chalky. Place them into a large container and fill with at least one litre of tap water.
    • The water needs to be changed four times during the 48-hour period – make sure you use a sieve, so you don't lose any of the Alkalinity Enhancers.

Important information for rainwater users:
Please use rainwater that has been boiled and cooled, or chlorinated water for preparing the filters and stones. This protects against potential algae and other micro-organisms in the tank water which will compromise the filter.

After 48 hours

  • Discard the soaking water
Use a sieve to catch the Mineral Stones and Alkalinity Enhancers
  • Prepare the Ceramic Pre-Filter
Place the Ceramic Filter in a jug of water and submerge for 5 minutes. Now wet the coconut fibre scrubber and gently rub it over the entire surface of the filter. Finish by running water over the filter, it's now ready to use.
  • Prepare the Multi-Stage Filter
Prepare the filter following the steps below to ensure water flows through the filter correctly and avoid air bubbles, which can cause overflow.
    • Fill a two-litre jug or bowl with clean, cold water and submerge the Multi-Stage Filter. Wait until all air bubbles have been released.
    • Take the filter out of the water and refill the jug with clean water
    • Slowly pour two litres of water through the white top of the filter, making sure the water runs out the bottom.
    • Place a towel on a flat, hard surface and tap the filter firmly on its side several times to clear air bubbles and move the water through the filter again
    • Some black carbon particles may run out of the bottom of the filter – this is normal. The carbon is from the first layer of the Filter Cartridge and is harmless. It will eventually settle onto the bottom of the lower tank.
  • Rinse the Anti-Bacterial Stones and system containers
Run the zazen Anti-Bacterial Stones under tap water to remove any dust. Rinse all parts of the system containers with warm water (rainwater users, see note to the left) and wipe dry. Do not use detergents.

Care

Caring for your product

Get the most out of your zazen Alkaline Water System with these simple tips.

Don't overfill the tank
Refill the top tank (four litres) when the bottom tank is half empty.

Allow time for water to filter
The super-fine filtration system means it will take around 90 minutes for a full top tank to filter into the bottom tank, ready to drink.

Clean the filter regularly
If the Ceramic Pre-Filter is dirty, water can't filter through to the bottom tank. To clean it, gently rub the outside surface of the Ceramic Filter with the coconut fibre scrubber supplied and cold water.

Keep the system out of direct sunlight
Position your system in a cool area, away from direct sunlight.

Replace your filter parts every 6 months
We'll remind you every 6 months, so you know you're always drinking the highest quality water (see over for more details).

Cleaning your system and replacing parts

Follow the zazen Alkaline Water System cleaning and maintenance schedule to ensure optimal performance.

Daily / Weekly

Cleaning the Ceramic Pre-Filter
You will need to clean the Ceramic Pre-Filter on a regular basis – it may turn orange or brown due to the organic matter in the source water that is being trapped on its outside.
To clean, take the top tank with the Ceramic Pre-Filter attached to the sink. Using the coconut fibre scrubber supplied, gently wipe the Ceramic Pre-Filter to remove the build-up and rinse with cold clean water.
Never use detergent to clean the Ceramic Pre-Filter.

Topping up your bottom tank

  • Whenever the bottom tank is 1/2 empty (or 1/2 full!) you can fill the top tank.
  • The bottom tank holds a maximum of 8 litres, and the top tank holds a maximum of 4 litres.
  • Remember, it will take at least 90 minutes to filter 4 litres from the top tank into the bottom tank.
  • If the bottom tank is full, do not try to fill the top tank.
  • If there is water sitting in the top tank after two hours, the Ceramic Pre-Filter needs to be cleaned. Refer to instructions above.

Every 4 to 6 months

Time to replace the Multi-Stage Filter
Replace the Multi-Stage Filter at least every six months (or sooner if you're consuming more than 12 litres per day).
Make sure to discard the old Multi-Stage Filter – this is full of chemicals and toxins from the past six months and can't be recycled.

What role do they play?
Multi-Stage Filter

  • Micro-filters harmful toxins and chemicals
  • Filters PFAS (forever chemicals), fluoride, aluminium, lead, arsenic, chlorine, pesticides, chemicals, copper, detergents and more
  • Preserves beneficial alkaline minerals
  • Adds silica to enhance clarity and taste

Why is this important?
Removing these toxins and chemicals ensures your water is safe to drink and is hydrating your body at a cellular level, flushing the toxins ingested from foods and your environment.
It also transforms your source water so it tastes delicious.

Every 12 months

Time for your annual replacement & clean
Replace the Multi-Stage Filter again, along with the Ceramic Pre-Filter, Anti-Bacterial Stones and Alkalinity Enhancers.
This is also an ideal time to clean out the inside of the bottom tank with a clean cloth and warm water. You can also soak your Mineral Stones for a few minutes in hot water to reinvigorate them, just make sure to let them cool before carefully placing them back in your system.
The Ceramic Filter can be recycled, and the Anti-Bacterial Stones and Alkalinity Enhancers can be placed in the garden.

What role do they play?
Ceramic Pre-Filter

  • Traps nano / microplastics, rust, sediment, mould and spores
  • Blocks bacteria, Giardia, parasites and harmful micro-organisms

Anti-Bacterial Stones

  • Keep the lower tank clean and fresh

Alkalinity Enhancers

  • Release ionised magnesium and calcium to boost alkalinity

Why is this important?
Replacing the Ceramic Pre-Filter prevents particulates from clogging the Multi-Stage Filter preserving its effectiveness and lifespan.
The Anti-Bacterial Stones keep the bottom tank clean (between annual cleans) while the ionised magnesium in the Alkalinity Enhancers ensures the pH is balanced all year round.

Every 5 years

Time to replace the Mineral Stones
Replacing the Mineral Stones will coincide with an annual replacement and clean.
Mineral Stones can also be placed in the garden.

What role do they play?
Mineral Stones

  • Help water to intelligently absorb alkaline minerals
  • Balance pH and increase the amount of dissolved oxygen in the water
  • Release magnesium, potassium, calcium, silicon and other trace minerals

Why is this important?
Your body needs water to contain essential alkaline minerals so it can be absorbed at a cellular level and not have to take minerals from your body to assist with hydration.
