Before Driving > Check Before Driving For Safe Driving The following pages explain your vehicle’s safety features and how to use them properly. The safety precautions below are ones that we consider to be among the most important. Important Safety Precautions Some states, provinces, and territories prohibit the use of cell phones other than hands-free devices by the driver while driving.
Before Driving > Check Before Driving Control your speed Excessive speed is a major factor in crash injuries and deaths. Generally, the higher the speed, the greater the risk, but serious injuries can also occur at lower speeds. Never drive faster than is safe for current conditions, regardless of the maximum speed posted.

Before Driving > Check Before Driving Driving Preparation Exterior Checks Make sure there are no people or objects behind or around the vehicle. ≫ There are blind spots from the inside. Make sure the tires are in good condition. ≫ Check air pressures, and check for damage and excessive wear. Checking Tires P.378 Make sure the hood is securely closed.
Page 19
Before Driving > Check Before Driving Adjust your seat to a position suitable for driving. Be sure the front seats are adjusted as far to the rear as possible while allowing the driver to control the vehicle. Sitting too close to a front airbag can result in serious or fatal injury in a crash.
Before Driving > Check Before Driving Precautions While Driving In Rain Avoid driving in deep water and on flooded roads. This can damage the engine or driveline, or cause electrical component failure. Other Precautions If there is a strong impact with something under the vehicle, stop in a safe location. Check the underside of the vehicle for damage or any fluid leaks.
Before Driving > Check Before Driving Never put a seat belt over yourself and a child. During a crash, the belt would likely press deep into the child and cause serious or fatal injuries. Never let two children use the same seat belt. Both children could be very seriously injured in a crash.
Page 22
Before Driving > Check Before Driving Positioning a rear-facing child seat Child seats must be placed and secured in a rear seating position. Experts recommend use of a rear-facing seat for a child so long as the child’s height and weight are appropriate for a rear-facing seat. Infants should never be seated in a forward-facing position.
Before Driving > Check Before Driving Forward-facing child seat placement We strongly recommend placing a forward-facing child seat in a rear seating position. Placing a forward-facing child seat in the front seat can be hazardous, even with advanced front airbags that automatically turn the passenger’s front airbag off. A rear seat is the safest place for a child.
Before Driving > Check Before Driving LATCH-compatible child seats have been developed to simplify the installation process and reduce the likelihood of injuries caused by incorrect installation. Installing a Child Seat Installing a LATCH-Compatible Child Seat A LATCH-compatible child seat can be installed in either of the two outer rear seats. A child seat is attached to the lower anchors with either the rigid or flexible type of connectors.
Page 25
Before Driving > Check Before Driving [ 2 ] Raise the head restraint to its highest 4 Straight top tether type position. ≫ Remove the cargo area cover Cargo Area Cover P.174 [ 3 ] Route the tether strap between the head restraint legs.
Page 26
Before Driving > Check Before Driving LATCH-compatible restraint systems that are fitted with rigid-type attachments cannot be installed in the rear center seat. However, a system fitted with flexible-type attachments can be installed in the center seat, provided that the manufacturer’s instructions for that system permit the use of the inner anchors with the stated spacing.
Page 27
Before Driving > Check Before Driving [ 5 ] Grab the shoulder part of the seat belt near the buckle, and pull up to remove any slack from the lap part of the belt. ≫ When doing this, place your weight on the child seat and push it into the vehicle seat.
Page 28
Before Driving > Check Before Driving Adding Security with a Tether A tether anchor point is provided behind the rear 4 Outer position outer seating positions and in the ceiling for the rear center. If you have a child seat that comes with a tether but can be installed with a seat belt, the tether may be used for additional security.
Before Driving > Check Before Driving Using an outer anchor [ 1 ] Raise the head restraint to its highest 4 Straight top tether type position. ≫ Remove the cargo area cover Cargo Area Cover P.174 [ 2 ] Route the tether strap between the head restraint legs.
Before Driving > Check Before Driving Using the center anchor [ 1 ] Lower the head restraint to its lowest 4 Straight top tether type position. [ 2 ] Open the anchor cover. [ 3 ] Route the tether strap over the head restraint.
Before Driving > Check Before Driving Checklist Do the child’s knees bend comfortably over the edge of the seat? Does the shoulder belt cross between the child’s neck and arm? Is the lap part of the seat belt as low as possible, touching the child’s thighs? Will the child be able to stay seated like this for the whole trip?
Before Driving > Check Before Driving Monitoring child passengers We strongly recommend that you keep an eye on child passengers. Even older, more mature children sometimes need to be reminded to fasten their seat belts and sit up properly. 3 WARNING Allowing a child age 12 or under to sit in front can result in injury or death if the passenger’s front airbag inflates.
Acura has approved. Use of any other type of device may adversely affect the vehicle’s electronic systems or allow them to be compromised, possibly resulting in a system malfunction, drained the 12-volt battery, or other unexpected problems.
Page 34
Before installing any electronic accessory, have the installer contact a dealer for assistance. If possible, have a dealer inspect the final installation. If any Acura Genuine Accessories become inoperable, refer to the separate accessory owner’s manual (if applicable) or consult a dealer for assistance to troubleshoot the potential faulty condition.
Before Driving > Check Before Driving Airbag System Components The front, driver’s knee, front passenger’s knee, side, and side curtain airbags are deployed according to the direction and severity of impact. Both side curtain airbags are deployed in a rollover. The airbag system includes: aTwo SRS (Supplemental Restraint System) front airbags.
Before Driving > Check Before Driving iImpact sensors that can detect a moderate-to-severe front or side impact. jAn indicator on the roof console that alerts you that the passenger’s airbag has been turned off. kAn indicator on the instrument panel that alerts you to a possible problem with your airbag system or seat belt tensioners.
Before Driving > Check Before Driving Housing Locations The front airbags are housed in the center of the steering wheel for the driver, and in the dashboard for the front passenger. Both airbags are marked SRS AIRBAG. Operation Front airbags are designed to inflate during moderate-to-severe frontal collisions. When the vehicle decelerates suddenly, the sensors send information to the control unit which signals one or both front airbags to inflate.
Before Driving > Check Before Driving Rollovers: In a rollover, your best form of protection is a seat belt or, if your vehicle is equipped with a rollover sensor, both a seat belt and a side curtain airbag. Front airbags, however, are not designed to deploy in a rollover as they would provide little, if any, protection.
Page 39
Before Driving > Check Before Driving a Passenger’s Seat Weight Sensors We advise against allowing a child age 12 or under to ride in the front passenger’s seat. However, if you do allow a small child or infant to ride in the front passenger’s seat, the system is designed to automatically deactivate the front passenger’s airbag.
Before Driving > Check Before Driving Knee Airbags The knee SRS airbags inflate in a moderate-to-severe frontal collision to help keep the driver and/or front passenger in the proper position and to help maximize the benefit provided by the vehicle’s other safety features. SRS (Supplemental Restraint System) indicates that the airbags are designed to supplement seat belt not replace them.
Before Driving > Check Before Driving When knee airbags deploy with little or no visible damage Because the airbag system senses sudden deceleration, a strong impact to the vehicle framework or suspension might cause one or more of the airbags to deploy. Examples include running into a curb, the edge of a hole, or other low fixed objects that cause a sudden deceleration in the vehicle chassis.
Page 42
Before Driving > Check Before Driving Operation When the sensors detect a moderate-to-severe side impact, the control unit signals the side airbag on the impact side to immediately inflate. a Side Airbag a Side Airbag When a side airbag deploys with little or no visible damage Because the airbag system senses sudden acceleration, a strong impact to the side of the vehicle’s framework can cause a side airbag to deploy.
Before Driving > Check Before Driving Make sure you and your front seat and rear outboard passengers always sit upright. Leaning into the path of a side airbag can prevent the airbag from deploying properly and increases the risk of serious injury.
Before Driving > Check Before Driving Operation The side curtain airbag is designed to deploy in a rollover or a moderate-to-severe side impact. a Side Curtain Airbag If the impact is on the passenger’s side, the passenger’s side curtain airbag deploys even if there are no occupants on that side of the vehicle.
Before Driving > Check Before Driving Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) Indicator When the power mode is set to ON The indicator comes on for a few seconds, then goes off. This tells you the system is working properly. If the indicator comes on at any other time, or does not come on at all, have the system checked by a dealer as soon as possible.
Before Driving > Check Before Driving The occupant is sitting in an upright position wearing the seat belt properly and the seat-back is not excessively reclined. The occupant is not leaning against the door or center console. The occupant’s feet are placed on the floor in front of them. There are no objects hanging from the front passenger’s seat.

Maintenance > Maintenance Under the Hood Recommended Engine Oil Use a Genuine Acura Motor Oil or another commercial engine oil of suitable viscosity for the ambient temperature as shown. Oil is a major contributor to your engine’s performance and longevity. If you drive the vehicle with insufficient or deteriorated oil, the engine may fail or be damaged.
Maintenance > Maintenance Under the Hood Oil Check We recommend that you check the engine oil level every time you refuel. Park the vehicle on level ground. Wait approximately three minutes after turning the engine off before you check the oil.
Maintenance > Maintenance Under the Hood Do not fill the engine oil above the upper mark. Overfilling the engine oil may result in leaks and engine damage. If any oil spills, wipe it away immediately. Spilled oil may damage the engine compartment components.
Do not throw the oil away into a garbage can or onto the ground. Engine Coolant Specified coolant: Acura Long Life Antifreeze/Coolant Type 2 This coolant is premixed with 50% antifreeze and 50% water. Do not add any straight antifreeze or water.
If it is completely empty, also check the coolant level in the radiator. Add the engine coolant accordingly. If Acura antifreeze/coolant is not available, you may use another major brand of non- silicate coolant as a temporary replacement. Check that it is a high quality coolant recommended for aluminum engines.
Using a transmission fluid other than Acura HCF-2 may adversely affect the operation and durability of your vehicle’s transmission, and damage the transmission. Any damage caused by using a transmission fluid that is not equivalent to Acura HCF-2 is not covered by Acura’s new vehicle limited warranty.
Using any non-Acura brake fluid can cause corrosion and decrease the longevity of the system. Have the brake system flushed and refilled with Acura Heavy Duty Brake Fluid DOT 3 as soon as possible.
Page 376
Maintenance > Maintenance Under the Hood Do not use engine antifreeze or a vinegar/water solution in the windshield washer reservoir. Antifreeze can damage your vehicle’s paint. A vinegar/water solution can damage the windshield washer pump. Use only commercially available windshield washer fluid. Avoid prolonged use of hard water to prevent lime scale buildup.

Maintenance > Checking and Maintaining Tires Checking Tires Have a dealer check the tires if you feel a consistent vibration while driving. New tires and any that have been removed and reinstalled should be properly balanced. Measure the air pressure when tires are cold. This means the vehicle has been parked for at least three hours, or driven less than 1 mile (1.6 km).
Maintenance > Checking and Maintaining Tires Underinflated tires wear unevenly, adversely affect handling and fuel economy, and are more likely to fail from overheating. Overinflated tires make your vehicle ride harshly, are more prone to road hazards, and wear unevenly. Every day before you drive, look at each of the tires.
Maintenance > Checking and Maintaining Tires Label Example The tire and loading information label attached to the driver’s doorjamb contains: a The number of people your vehicle can carry. b The total weight your vehicle can carry. Do not exceed this weight. c The original tire sizes for front, rear, and spare.
Maintenance > Checking and Maintaining Tires Tire Sizes Whenever tires are replaced, they should be replaced with tires of the same size. Following is an example of tire size with an explanation of what each component means. P235/60 R18 102T P: Vehicle type (P indicates passenger vehicle).
Maintenance > Checking and Maintaining Tires Maximum Load Rating– Means the load rating for a tire at the maximum permissible inflation pressure for that tire. Recommended Inflation Pressure– The cold tire inflation pressure recommended by the manufacturer. Treadwear Indicators (TWI)– Means the projections within the principal grooves designed to give a visual indication of the degrees of wear of the tread.
Page 384
Maintenance > Checking and Maintaining Tires Traction The traction grades, from highest to lowest, are AA, A, B, and C. Those grades represent the tire’s ability to stop on wet pavement as measured under controlled conditions on specified government test surfaces of asphalt and concrete. A tire marked C may have poor traction performance.
Maintenance > Checking and Maintaining Tires Wear Indicators The groove where the wear indicator is located is about 1/16 inch (about 1.6 mm) shallower than elsewhere on the tire. If the tread has worn so that the indicator is exposed, replace the tire. Worn out tires have poor traction on wet roads.
Maintenance > Checking and Maintaining Tires Winter Tires If driving on snowy or frozen roads, mount all season marked M+S tires, or snow tires; reduce speed; and maintain sufficient distance between vehicles when driving. Be particularly careful when operating the steering wheel or brakes to prevent skidding.
Page 387
Maintenance > Checking and Maintaining Tires Whenever tires are rotated, you must calibrate the TPMS.
Maintenance > 12-Volt Battery Maintaining 12-Volt Battery When you find corrosion, clean the 12-volt battery terminals by applying a baking powder and water solution. Clean the terminals with a damp towel. Cloth/towel dry the 12-volt battery. Coat the terminals with grease to help prevent future corrosion. When replacing the 12-volt battery, the replacement must be of the same specifications.
Maintenance > 12-Volt Battery Checking the 12-Volt Battery The condition of the 12-volt battery is monitored by a sensor located on the negative terminal of the 12-volt battery. If there is a problem with this sensor, the driver information interface will display a warning message. If this happens, have your vehicle inspected by a dealer.
Maintenance > Climate Control System Maintenance Air Conditioning To ensure proper and safe operation, the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE J2845) recommends that the refrigerant system only be serviced by trained and certified technicians. Never repair or replace the air conditioning evaporator (cooling coil) with one removed from a used or salvaged vehicle.
Maintenance > Cleaning Interior Care Use a damp cloth with a mixture of mild detergent and warm water to remove dirt. Use a clean cloth to remove detergent residue. Do not spill liquids inside the vehicle. Electrical devices and systems may malfunction if liquids are splashed on them.
Maintenance > Cleaning Wires are mounted to the inside of the rear window. Wipe along the same direction as the wires with a soft cloth so as not to damage them. Be careful not to spill fluids, such as water or glass cleaner, on or around the cover of the electrical components around the rearview mirror.
Page 393
Maintenance > Cleaning Do not spray water into the air intake vents. It can cause a malfunction. If water and any chemicals are on the brakes when your vehicle is being washed, drive a short distance and apply the brakes several times before parking. Parking while brakes are wet may cause them to be stuck by rust.
