Snuza Hero SE Manual

Introduction

Intended Use:
The HeroSE is a portable movement monitor designed to monitor your baby's movements while sleeping and alert you if no movement is detected for whatever reason.
This device is intended for home use and to be operated by the baby's caregiver. The caregiver must have a good understanding of the instructions and safety measures within the user manual.
The HeroSE should be clipped onto your baby's diaper/nappy and is completely portable. No cords, wires, sensor pads, base station or external power are required.
Simply switch on, clip on and experience greater peace of mind.
The HeroSE detects even the slightest movement and will alert you if the detected movement rate slows (this feature may be disabled) or if no movement is detected at all. After 15 seconds of no movement detected, the device will activate a Pre-Alert Notification with Vibration, followed 5 seconds later by an audible alarm.
When no movement is detected for 15 seconds, the Pre-Alert Notification with Vibration activates. If movement is detected again within five seconds, the Movement Indicator Light (3) will flash red with each detected movement. If this happens three times, the HeroSE will enter Repeated Pre-Alert Notification mode, where the Movement Indicator Light (3) flashes red and beeps every 2 seconds. This indicates that there have been three Pre-Alert Notifications on 3 separate occasions. The HeroSE continues monitoring during this notification.
The Repeated Pre-Alert Notification can be reset (and silenced) by briefly pressing either the ON/OFF (6), MODE/OFF (7) buttons or by turning the HeroSE off and then back on. The Repeated Pre-Alert Notification feature can be disabled during monitoring by pressing the MODE/OFF (7) button for 2 seconds, indicated by a single beep and flashing of the red Movement Indicator Light (3) and Alarm Indicator Light (4). When the HeroSE is turned off and on again, the settings revert to the Repeated Pre-Alert Notification feature being enabled.
** Snuza HeroSE is not suitable for co-sleeping or bed-sharing.

Precautions

  • Movement from external sources such as being pushed in a stroller/ pram or travelling in a vehicle or aircraft may be detected by the sensor.
The HeroSE should not be relied upon where external sources of movement are present.
  • To monitor your baby effectively, your baby must sleep in his/her own separate bed as the sensor may detect movements of another person, preventing it from alarming.
  • To protect the HeroSE's sensitive Movement Sensor from damage, turn the device off and remove it from the diaper during tummy time, feeding, or diaper changes. Once you are ready to resume monitoring movements, turn the the device on and securely reattach it to the diaper.
  • Radio transmitters such as cell phones, audio and video baby monitors, cordless phones, walkie-talkies, wireless routers, etc. may cause interference with the monitor's ability to detect movement. The device should not be placed within 2 meters of other transmitting devices.
  • No modification of this device is allowed.
  • A single device should be dedicated for use with one baby only.
  • Small parts that have become detached for some unlikely reason may result in a choking hazard.
  • In case your baby develops skin sensitivity where the HeroSE makes contact with your baby's skin, as a precaution, please check for red marks after 1 hour of placement. If the skin sensitivity persists, discontinue use immediately.
  • Keep out of reach of pets and other children as damage to the device may cause it to not perform as intended.
  • Do not insert anything into the Sound Emission Hole (2).
  • Do not allow any liquid to enter the Sound Emission Hole. (2)
  • Do not use undue force to bend the clip. (fig.2)
  • Do not pull the Battery Cover Release Clip (10) beyond the Guard Rail. (11)

Quick Start Guide

  1. Use the correct diaper size and ensure a snug fit (see Section: Diaper/Nappy Fitment).
  2. Switch on by briefly pressing the ON/OFF button (6).
  3. A start-up test will illuminate the indicator lights, test the Pre-Alert Vibration function, play 3 audible tones and perform a battery test.
  4. Clip the HeroSE onto the diaper so that the Movement Sensor (1) is in direct contact with the baby's tummy (see Section: Fitting your Snuza HeroSE).
  5. The Movement Indicator Light (3) flashes on each movement. See Section: Monitoring for a full description.
  6. If movement is not detected for 15 seconds, the HeroSE will activate a Pre-Alert Notification with Vibration.
  7. If movement resumes within 5 seconds after the Pre-Alert Notification with Vibration, the Movement Indicator Light (3) will flash red with each detected movement. This serves as a Pre-Alert Indication, informing you that there was a 15-second period where no movement was detected.
  8. After three Pre-Alert Notification with Vibration occurences, the HeroSE will activate the Repeated Pre-Alert Notification consisting of a short beep and flashing of the red Movement Indicator Light (3) every two seconds.
  9. If the period of no movement detected reaches 20 seconds, an audible alarm will sound and the Alarm Indicator Light (4) will flash red. The caregiver must check the reason for no movement detected.
  10. The alarm can be stopped by pressing the MODE/OFF (7) button and monitoring will continue. Alternatively, turn the device off and on again.
  11. To switch the HeroSE off, press both the ON/OFF (6) and MODE/OFF (7) buttons simultaneously. A shutdown tone will be heard and monitoring will stop.

Diaper/Nappy Fitment

Correct diaper fitment is essential for the operation of HeroSE. The thin flap of material at the top of the diaper must be folded over the thicker part before the diaper is closed (this is the section to which HeroSE will be attached). The diaper should fit snugly on the baby with the top of the diaper just below the belly button. Loose fitting diapers will gape, causing the device to lose contact with the skin, resulting in a no-movement alarm. A very 'full' or wet diaper may also cause it to gape. For side-sleeping babies, attach the device to the side of the tummy away from the mattress.

Fitting your Snuza HeroSE

Take care not to pinch your baby when attaching HeroSE to the diaper (you may notice a red mark on your baby's tummy if pinching occurs). To avoid pinching, place your fingers between your baby's skin and the diaper when attaching securely.

Ensure that the Battery Cover (9) is secure. Clip your HeroSE all the way onto the diaper to the full extent of the clip, as shown below:
Make sure that the Movement Sensor (1) is in contact with your baby's tummy around the belly button area, although closer to the sides may suit different sleeping positions.
The World Health Organisation (WHO) recommends that babies be placed to sleep on their back unless advised otherwise by a doctor - http://www.who.int/en/

Operation

Start-up

Switch on by briefly pressing the ON/OFF button (6).
A startup-test will run which will test all indicator lights, the Pre-Alert Vibration function, the audible alarm and the battery level. If a failure of any item is detected, the Self-Test Failure Alarm will sound and the device cannot be used.
After the battery test, the Battery Indicator Light will flash 3 times with simultaneous single-tone beep. The colour of the Battery Indicator Light has the following meaning:

Green Battery OK
Yellow/Orange Battery nearing depletion: the HeroSE can be used but the battery must be replaced as soon as possible.
Red HeroSE cannot be used, replace battery. The Low Battery Signal will start beeping immediately.

Ensure that the battery level is high enough for proper operation (i.e. green or orange light). Otherwise, DO NOT use the device. If the battery is too depleted to operate, the Battery Indicator Light (2) will flash red accompanied by a short beep every second. Change the battery before further use (see Section Replacing the Battery). To switch OFF, press both the ON/OFF button (6) and the MODE/OFF button (7) simultaneously.
If there is no movement detected, the Alarm Indicator Light will flash red every 3 seconds. If movement is detected, the Movement Indicator Light (3) flashes with each movement:

Green Flashes on each movement: Movement detected with no prior Pre-Alert
Notification with Vibration occurrences.
Yellow and detected movement rate notification
(Dual-tone beep every second).
Detected movement rate has slowed. If the regular movement rate is detected again, the Movement Indicator Light will reset to green (normal) and the notification will stop. To disable this function, see Section: Slow Movement Notification.
Red on each movement. There has been at least one occurrance of the Pre-Alert Notification with Vibration (no movement detected for 15 seconds), where movement was subsequently detected (see below).
Red and
Pre-Alert
Notification with Vibration.
The Repeated Pre-Alert Notification indicates that there have been three occurrences of the Pre-Alert Notification with Vibration. To disable this function, see Section: Pre-Alert Notification with Vibration.

The Alarm Indicator Light (4) signifies the following:

Flashes red with vibration and 5 short beeps. If no movement is detected at all for
15 seconds, HeroSE activates a Pre-Alert
Notification with Vibration. The Alarm
Indicator Light (4) flashes red
simultaneously with a beep. If movement is detected again within the next 5 seconds, the Movement Indicator Light (3) will flash red on each subsequent movement. This Pre-Alert Indication is to inform the user that there has been a prior Pre-Alert Notification with Vibration.
Flashes red and alarm sounds. If no movement at all is detected for a further
5 seconds after the Pre-Alert Notification with
Vibration (20 seconds in total), the Alarm Indicator Light (4) flashes red and an audible alarm sounds. The caregiver must attend to the situation immediately. The alarm can be deactivated by briefly pressing the MODE/OFF button (7) or by turning HeroSE off completely (press ON/OFF (6) and MODE/OFF (7) buttons simultaneously). If the MODE/OFF button is used to deactivate the alarm, monitoring will continue.

Travelling

Movement from external sources such as being pushed in a stroller/pram or travelling in a vehicle or aircraft may be detected by the HeroSE's sensor. The HeroSE should not be relied upon where external sources of movement are present.

Clothing

  • HeroSE must be clipped onto the folded waistband of the diaper or the waistband of elasticated pants so that the Movement Sensor (1) touches the baby in the tummy area.
  • In the unlikely event that a red friction mark is noticed on the baby's skin where the HeroSE was positioned, a thin layer of clothing can be placed between the baby's skin and the device, but ensure that the Movement sensor maintains contact with the clothing. The position of the device must also be changed to a different location on the tummy, away from where the red mark was noticed and preferably closer to the side. As a precaution, please check for red marks after 1 hour of placement.
  • The HeroSE can also be used if baby is dressed in light clothing (for example, a Babygrow or light vest) over the nappy or pants to which device is attached but the Movement sensor must maintain firm contact with the baby.
  • Too much clothing may attenuate or muffle the alarm. Ensure the alarm can be heard even if the baby is covered in clothing and/or blankets.

Baby Sound and Video Monitors (Optional)

The HeroSE can be used with a baby sound or video monitor to extend the distance at which the alarm can be heard.

Settings

Audible Tick

To offer greater peace of mind, this feature causes HeroSE to emit an audible 'tick' on each movement detected. To enable the audible 'tick', ensure that device is switched ON, then press the MODE/OFF button (7) briefly (less than 1 second). To increase the volume of the 'tick', press the MODE/OFF button once again for medium volume and again for high volume. To turn off, briefly press the MODE/OFF button a fourth time - the HeroSE will give a louder beep. This feature may be used with a baby sound monitor to enable you to hear the ticking sound from a distance.

Pre-Alert Notification

During monitoring, the HeroSE activates a Pre-Alert Notification with Vibration if no movement is detected for 15 seconds. If movement is detected again within the next 5 seconds, the Movement Indicator Light (3) will flash red with each subsequent movement. After three such events with the Pre-Alert Notification enabled, the Repeated Pre-Alert Notification will activate. This causes the Movement Indicator Light (3) to flash red every 2 seconds, accompanied by an audible beep.
Note: Monitoring will continue while the Pre-Alert Notification is sounding.
The Pre-Alert Notification with Vibration is automatically enabled each time HeroSE is switched ON. To disable this feature, ensure HeroSE is switched ON, then press and hold the MODE/OFF button (7) for at least 2 seconds. Wait for a tone, brief vibration, and simultaneous flash of the red Movement Indicator Light (3) and Alarm Indicator Light (4). To re-enable the notification, switch HeroSE off completely by pressing both ON/OFF (6) and MODE/OFF (7) buttons simultaneously. Then switch it ON again, and the Pre-Alert Notification with Vibration will be enabled by default.

Slow Movement Notification

The Slow Movement Notification alerts you if detected movement rate slows down. It is identified by the Movement Indicator Light (3) flashing yellow with a simultaneous dual-tone audible beep every second. This feature is automatically enabled each time HeroSE is switched ON. To disable this notification during monitoring, ensure HeroSE is switched ON, then press and hold the ON/OFF button (6) for more than 2 seconds until you hear a brief double-beep with short vibration. To re-enable the notification, switch HeroSE off completely by pressing both ON/OFF (6) and MODE/OFF (7) buttons simultaneously, then switch it ON again. The Slow Movement Notification is enabled by default when HeroSE is switched on.

Battery

Battery Indicator

If the battery becomes depleted during monitoring, the Battery Indicator Light (2) will flash as follows:

Red flash on each movement. Nearing depletion: Replace battery before further use.
3 audible beeps every 4 seconds and red flash every 2 seconds. Battery depleted: No monitoring will take place.
Replace battery before use.

If the battery is nearing depletion or is depleted, replace battery before further use of the HeroSE (see Section: Replacing the Battery).

Battery Life

The life of the replaceable battery depends entirely on usage. Battery life will vary significantly depending on the average daily duration of use and/ or alarm duration and/or number of alarms. Turning the HeroSE on and off unnecessarily will shorten the battery life. If the number of alarms is high, check diaper fitment.
Please note that the product guarantee does not apply to the battery. The typical operating time before the battery needs replacement is 4 - 6 months when used on average 8 hours per day.

Replacing the Battery

For all SE models: use a CR2 (CR15270) battery available from most retail outlets. We recommend the Energizer or Duracell CR2 Primary-cell. Rechargeable batteries cannot be used. Please visit our website www.snuza.com for information about batteries and details of your national distributor.

IMPORTANT - READ FIRST!

This product is intended to act as an aid in caring for your baby, and is not intended to replace, be used without, or in lieu of, monitoring by a responsible adult.
It is essential that the HeroSE's flexible tip containing the movement sensor maintains constant contact with your baby's tummy.
ALWAYS: Use the correct size diaper/nappy. If it is too loose, the HeroSE may lose contact with the skin, making it unable to detect movement.

Fold the top of the diaper/nappy over before attaching the HeroSE, to ensure a firm grip. Use the diaper/nappy adjusters to provide a snug fit around your baby's tummy.

Firmly clip HeroSE onto the folded diaper waistband, using the full extent of the clip, while being careful not to pinch your baby's skin.

Ensure that HeroSE sits squarely on the diaper, and that the Movement Sensor (1) is in contact with your baby's tummy.
Press the ON/OFF button (6) to turn on.
To ensure that the HeroSE is reliably able to monitor movement, please follow the steps set out above before using the device. This will reduce unnecessary notifications and alarms caused by a lack of contact with the skin.
NOTE:
Handle the HeroSE with care to prevent damage to the clip or sensor.

Take care not to pinch your baby's skin when attaching HeroSE to the diaper/nappy. To prevent this, place your fingers between your baby's skin and the diaper/nappy to ensure skin is not pinched. Make sure that the device is clipped securely onto the diaper/nappy and double-check for any skin pinching.
