Drive
Faster even when
it comes to slowing down.
The BMW Motorrad braking system on the BMW K 1200 S
has been specially adapted to the demands of a sportsbike. Its
defining characteristics are low weight, durability and outstanding
performance.
The stopping power is produced by two 320-mm-diameter disc
brakes. The BMW K 1200 S is fitted as standard with the partially
integral version of the new-generation BMW Motorrad Integral ABS*
system, which weighs just 2.2 kilograms. This optimises the distribu-
tion of braking force to front and rear wheels when the handlebar lever
is pulled. The foot brake, on the other hand, acts only on the rear wheel.
The system prevents rear-wheel lift, ensuring both wheels stay in
contact with the ground. It also offers riders precise control over brak-
ing, and ensures the braking force is appropriate for the current load.
No more maintenance is required than on motorcycles without ABS.

Let's get physical:
the sports shaft drive.
The BMW Motorrad Paralever, with its raised torque reactor strut,
is notable for its lightweight construction and sporting design.
A lower unsprung mass results in less weight, making the rear sus-
pension extremely sensitive and responsive.
Incorporated into the Paralever, the lightweight BMW Motorrad shaft
drive is the key to the responsiveness and smooth power delivery of
the BMW K 1200 S. It is extremely durable, and requires very little
maintenance.
* In the UK, the K 1200 S can also be supplied without ABS.

The clever design of the leading edge routes the air flow around the

rider, allowing comfortable riding even at high speeds. The modular

construction of the fairing makes servicing easy, while the front mud-
g
guard has been tested in wind tunnels to ensure optimum airflow

to the radiator, and as a result air inlets in the fairing are not required.

Adjustment (ESA).
U
Up until now, different surfaces, varying loads and individual riding
s
styles all made manual suspension adjustment a tricky business.

Achieving optimum balance in the preloading of springs and sus-

When stationary and with the engine running, the rider can adjust

E
ESA makes it possible for riders to adjust the chassis while riding,
to
to suit their own personal riding style and road conditions. At the
to
touch of a button, riders are able to choose between three settings
(Normal, Comfort and Sport) for front and rear suspension. The

Traction first.
BMW Motorrad ASC.
Optional ASC (Automatic Stability Control) is a rider aid that makes
motorcycling even safer. Fitted in conjunction with BMW Motorrad
Integral ABS, this drive-slip control system prevents rear wheelspin. In
adverse conditions, for example on wet or uneven surfaces, it signifi-
cantly improves the stability of the motorcycle, and with it the safety of
the rider. However, even ASC can't defy the laws of physics, and
when it is activated, riders need to exercise some caution – especially
when accelerating hard and leaning into corners. If you don't want the
electronics to intervene, the system can be deactivated at the touch
of a button, even while the bike is in motion.
