Fall 2024
Setting Up:
1. Turn the camera on using the power switch.
2. Plug the mic in the camera (p.42):
-
Make sure that phantom power (the MIC+48V switch) is OFF (p.42): on the control panel
(shown below to the right) located underneath the small plastic door on the left-hand side of the
camera, set both INPUT1 and INPUT2 to MIC
-
Now locate the port labeled
(pictured below, marked 'A'), and attach your mic using an XLR to the INPUT1 port (your XLR
cable should now be connecting your microphone on one end to the camera on the other)
3. Send power from the camera to the mic (p.43):
-
find the control panel; set the INPUT1 switch to
4. Map input(s) to channels:
-
In MENU, scroll down to AUDIO SET, then find XLR SET; set INPUT
CH SELECT to
-
These settings will duplicate the sound from one input channel to two
output channels; it sends the sound from your shotgun microphone to
both output channels CH1 and CH2.
*Note that you can choose to have two different audio inputs. For example, you
could also have an additional external source in input 2 or the internal omni recorded
on the second channel. To do this, set XLR SET to INPUT1/INPUT2 and then set the
INPUT 2 switch as desired, so that one channel (CH1) gets audio from the shotgun
microphone, while the other channel (CH2) gets audio from the other source.
5. Set levels to manual and adjust using the audio level wheels (p.44):
-
In the same area under the small plastic door on the left-hand side of
the camera (show in figure 2):
-
Follow the INPUT1 settings horizontally across the panel, and
locate the AUTO/MAN switch, then set it to
-
In the same way, follow the INPUT2 settings horizontally and
locate the AUTO/MAN switch, then set it to
-
You can adjust these levels using the AUDIO LEVEL wheels
To Record:
-
Get in position: Hold the microphone using the pistol hand grip attached to the base of the mic (be sure
to have your mic in the exact position you plan to shoot in while testing audio); alternatively, you could
either attach the mic to the top of the camera's handle, or have a crew member hold it
-
Test sound:
-
For dialogue: ask your subject to talk as they would during the shoot (if they're screaming during
this scene, have them scream; if they're whispering during this scene, have them whisper -- set
the audio for the specific shot)
-
For foley sounds/sound effects: make the sound exactly as you would during the shoot
-
For ambient sound/field recording: observe the sounds as they occur
