With +/-15kV ESD protection, the LCS485 is ideal for long distance differential signal transmission. Depending on the number of signal wires, it can operate under Four Wire Full Duplex or Two Wire Half Duplex mode.

DCE or DTE T.on, R.on DCE or DTE Selector settings Right selector should be set to DCE if an LCS485 is connected to a DTE device and be set to DTE if it connects to a DCE device. Both LCS485s can receive and transmit at the same time by different pairs of wires.
  • Page 8 DCE device. Only one LCS485 can transmit data at a time when its RTS is high. While its RTS is low, an LCS485 is able to receive data. Both LCS485’s should never have their RTS high and transmit data, because there is only one pair of lines for signals.

Monitor T.RTS, R.on Moni The right selector must be set to Moni, so the LCS485 becomes a receive-only device. Rx1 +/- signals are converted from RS485 pair to RS232 at DB-25 pin #3. Rx2 +/- signals are converted from another pair of RS485 to RS232 at DB-25 pin#2.

Diagnosis --------- Should you encounter any problem and wonder if the circuit works. You may conduct a simple diagnostics with a RS-232 terminal (assuming DTE) and the following steps. Set the right selector to DCE, because the RS232 terminal is DTE. Set the left selector to T.on, R.on On the terminal block, use a piece of wire and connect Tx + and Rx + together.
