  • Page 2 INTRODUCTION Throughout this manual, the term “stair” refers to the entire PATHWAY® HD Stair System and its compatibility with various components, including, but not limited to, platforms, ramps, guards, handrails, gates, and any/all hardware. The safety warnings throughout this manual, and on your equipment, if any, are for the protection of people and property.

    1. GETTING STARTED 1.1. Before beginning the assembly process, familiarize yourself with the system components. FIG. 1.1 shows the major system components fully assembled.     3. ASSEMBLE AND SET 1-TREAD TO 8-TREAD RISERS UP TO 63” 3.1. Before setting the stair riser, install the two lower riser legs; these are the two legs with the welded aluminum feet included with the riser (FIG. 3.1). The following steps may be more easily accomplished if the riser is on its side. 3.2.
  • Page 7 3.10. Tighten the two set screws in each upper riser leg pocket enough to hold the legs in place but do not tighten fully at this time. Do not lean, walk, or otherwise bear weight on the stair until installation is complete. If the riser is on its side, flip into the upright position using caution not to damage the legs.

    4. UPPER LANDING GUARDS OR TWO-LINE RAILS 4.1. Install guards or two-line rails in the upper landing platform (if not done previously) as described in the main PATHWAY HD Code Compliant Modular Access System Installation Manual. 4.2. If installing to an existing landing, skip to the next section. 5.

    6. UPPER LANDING GUARD CLOSURE 6.1. If the stair is installed on the 5’ (nominal) side of a platform, a guard closure is not required. Skip to Section 8, ‘STAIR HANDRAILS’, and install upper loops on both sides of the riser. 6.2.

    7. UPPER LANDING TWO-LINE CLOSURE (UP TO 30” ELEVATION) 7.1. If the stair is installed on the 5’ (nominal) side of a platform a two-line rail closure is not required. Skip to Section 8, ‘STAIR HANDRAILS’, and install upper loops on both sides of the riser. 7.2.

Begin by attaching the lower handrail brackets to the riser guard lower 1-1/2” square post, the uppermost riser guard upper 1-1/2” square post, and all the 1-1/2” square pickets using 5/16”-18 x 2-1/4” long button head socket cap screws, 5/16”-18 nylon insert locknuts and 5/16” flat washers oriented as shown.     11. LOWER RISER CLOSURE The lower riser closure is designed to be used with the lowermost riser set at 7” above a level surface. If the ground is uneven or the lowermost riser is not set at 7”, the lower riser closure may need to be trimmed to fit.

If there are platform corner pockets where no platform angle post is installed, trim the platform leg flush or slightly below the walking surface then install a corner pocket cover. Refer to Section 2.5 in the main PATHWAY HD Code Compliant Modular Access System Installation Manual for installing and securing platform corner pocket covers in place.

    13. OPTIONAL EQUIPMENT – RETURN TO GROUND HANDRAIL The step is available with two options to return the handrail to the ground. The first option is in line with the step handrail (“straight”) and the second option is to turn 90° from the step handrail (“turn”). The return to ground handrails (“return to ground”) come in left- and right-hand versions but are ordered separately.

OPTIONAL EQUIPMENT – RETURN TO LANDING HANDRAIL In addition to the return to ground at the bottom of the step, the step is available with options to return the handrail to a landing or to an existing surface at the top of the step. There are options to continue (extend) the handrail parallel to the step (straight) or turn 90°...
