1.1 Radiation safety precautions The SS200LS Digital Level Switch is not a major radiation hazard since the radioactive source is relatively small. However all radioactive materials should always be treated with caution, and the following practices are recommended:  Lock the control lever in the BEAM OFF position when transporting or handling the Source Housing ...

2.1 Level Switch Introduction The SS200LS Level Switch has three major components:  Source Housing – containing the radiation source  Detector – containing the scintillation detector  Control Unit – microcontroller with keypad for user interaction They are illustrated in the following diagram: Control Lever 238.5 [9.39]...
  • Page 14: What The Level Switch Measures

WHAT THE LEVEL SWITCH MEASURES The SS200LS Level Switch gives accurate trouble free level switching in a vessel or chute. OW IT WORKS The scintillation type detector is highly efficient; it allows the gauge to use a much lower activity radioisotope then other Nucleonic Level Switches. The scintillation detector consists of a Sodium Iodide (NaI) crystal doped with Thallium.
  • Page 15: Source Housing Components

2.2 Source housing components The Source Housing is a lead-filled cast steel or stainless steel container that encloses and shields the radioactive source. ADIOACTIVE SOURCE The radioisotope normally used is Caesium It is enclosed in a double 137. encapsulated stainless steel capsule mounted in a source retainer within the Source Housing.
  • Page 16: Radiation Detector Components

2.3 Radiation detector components The Detector comprises of:  A scintillation detector, which detects gamma rays  A photo-multiplier tube (PMT), which converts the gamma rays into electrical pulses  An electronics board, which gain stabilises the scintillator and transmits count rate information to the Control Unit 2.4 Control Unit components The Control Unit comprises of:...
