.1 Radiation safety precautions The SS200LS Digital Level Switch is not a major radiation hazard since the radioactive source is relatively small. However all radioactive materials should always be treated with caution, and the following practices are recommended: Lock the control lever in the BEAM OFF position when transporting or handling the Source Housing ...
.1 Level Switch Introduction The SS200LS Level Switch has three major components: Source Housing – containing the radiation source Detector – containing the scintillation detector Control Unit – microcontroller with keypad for user interaction They are illustrated in the following diagram: Control Lever 238.5 [9.39]...
WHAT THE LEVEL SWITCH MEASURES The SS200LS Level Switch gives accurate trouble free level switching in a vessel or chute. OW IT WORKS The scintillation type detector is highly efficient; it allows the gauge to use a much lower activity radioisotope then other Nucleonic Level Switches. The scintillation detector consists of a Sodium Iodide (NaI) crystal doped with Thallium.
.2 Source housing components The Source Housing is a lead-filled cast steel or stainless steel container that encloses and shields the radioactive source. ADIOACTIVE SOURCE The radioisotope normally used is Caesium It is enclosed in a double 137. encapsulated stainless steel capsule mounted in a source retainer within the Source Housing.
.3 Radiation detector components The Detector comprises of: A scintillation detector, which detects gamma rays A photo-multiplier tube (PMT), which converts the gamma rays into electrical pulses An electronics board, which gain stabilises the scintillator and transmits count rate information to the Control Unit 2.4 Control Unit components The Control Unit comprises of:...
.1 Delivery Check that you have received the following components in the configuration specified at the time of ordering: Control Unit Detector Source Housing Warning: DO NOT open or dismantle the source housing – the radioisotope is already installed 3.2 Selecting installation location ...
.1 Keypad operation The Control Unit keypad is the means of communicating with the Level Switch. It has a liquid crystal display and pressure keys. SING THE KEYS The keys have pressure sensitive contacts which are activated by pressing firmly in the key area.
.3 Viewing and setting parameters Parameters used in the calculations are stored in locations in the microprocessor memory. You can view a parameter by entering the location number then press FN, EXAM Note: The gauge must be in “calibrate” mode to examine locations For example, to view location 14 (today’s date) ...
.1 Preparing for calibration Turn the Source Housing control lever to BEAM ON. Leave the gauge on for 30 minutes prior to calibration. This is to allow for temperature instability within the Detector and to completely lock on to the Caesium source.

Set the Dead Band Factor in location 27 to 0.5. Press 2, 7, FN, EXAM, 0, . , 5, FN, LOAD Select the software switch for High trip (1) or Low trip (0). Press 2, 0, FN, EXAM, 1, FN, LOAD ...
.1 Maintenance requirements The SS200LS Level Switch is virtually maintenance free other than keeping the unit clean and calibrating it regularly. 6.2 Source housing and detector The Source Housing and Detector do not require routine maintenance. Warning: DO NOT dismantle the Source Housing for any reason.
.1 Gauge not working If the Control Unit is not working make the following checks: 1. Check supply voltage (88 to 264Vac or 18 to 36Vdc) 2. Check the fuse, located in the Control Unit on the motherboard. The fuse is 20 x 5mm 2A 3.
.1 Basic Principles The Level Switch operates on the principle of gamma ray absorption as illustrated below: Gamma rays from the radioactive source are partly absorbed by the material in the Vessel/Chute, the remainder pass through to the scintillation detector.
