General Information - Cellular Dual SIM The cellular Gen-2 RTU includes 2 SIM cards, which allows for the connection between the RTU and the servers via either the Verizon or AT&T cellular networks. Both SIM cards are active at initial installation with their respective carrier, and are field interchangeable.

Figure 1: Replacing SIM Card Cellular Antennas Internal Antenna All cellular units have an internal antenna mounted inside the enclosure. For typical installations, this antenna is sufficient for normal data communications. Omni Directional Antenna For installations where the unit is mounted inside a metal enclosure or a metal building, an external antenna may be needed.

Directional Antenna For cellular installations where signal strength is weak, it is possible to install a directional antenna to boost the signal. High Tide Technologies’ technical support staff have the appropriate tools and software to maximize the effectiveness of this antenna. Figure 3 shows a typical directional antenna.

3.2 General Information - Ethernet High Tide’s Gen-2 Remote Terminal Units have an on-board Registered Jack 45 (RJ-45) port and is shown in Figure 4. When an Ethernet connection is applied, it provides a basis of communication between the hardware in the field and our servers, via the ISP provided by the customer.

Input and Output Connections AC Power Connections Figure 5 shows the AC power input terminals. GREEN is for earth ground, WHITE is for neutral and BLACK is for line voltage. If required, local circuit protections should be provided outside the High Tide enclosure. If AC surge arresters are ordered with the unit, they will be installed at the factory.

4.3 Terminal Layout Figure 7 shows all the I/O and power connections on the Gen-2 RTU. 4.4 Discrete Inputs The Gen-2 is equipped with eight discrete inputs. These inputs can be configured in several different ways. All discrete inputs are optically isolated and can be configured via jumpers ‘JP1’ or ‘JP2’ as either sinking or sourcing. JP1 controls DI-1 thru DI-4 and JP2 controls DI-5 thru DI-8.

Dry Contacts and Open Collectors Figure 9 shows a typical dry contact installation. The YELLOW wire would be connected to one side of the dry contact or the open-drain. The BLACK wire would be connected to the other side of the contact or to the ground of the open-drain.

Active Voltage Sources Active voltage inputs are connected the same way as the dry contacts above, with the BLACK wire connected to the common ground and the BLUE wire connected to the active source, however JP1 must be in the GND position for this input mode.

Discrete Input LEDs and Test Button The discrete inputs have LEDs that will allow you to test the current state of the input. The LED for each discrete input is located in front of its respective discrete input. This is especially helpful during the initial installation of the High Tide unit.

4.5 Analog Inputs The Gen-2 is equipped with four analog inputs (AI-1 thru AI-4). The inputs can be configured as: ● 0-5V inputs ● 0-20mA or 4-20mA inputs ● Discrete status inputs The wiring connections for each of these configurations are discussed on the following pages.

24V power supply should be applied to the sensor, and then the return wire is connected to the selected analog input terminal. Three-wire current inputs With three-wire current inputs, an external power supply still needs to be applied to the sensor; however, a reference ground is also provided. This type of connection is typically used for sensors that need more than the minimum 4mA to power the sensor.

Self-powered current inputs There is a class of current sources that are self-powered. For these configurations, all that is required is a ground reference and the analog input signal. Voltage inputs (0-5V) The analog inputs can be used with sensors that produce voltage outputs between 0.0V and 5.0V. The input is tolerant of voltage levels up to 30V but will not report anything greater than 5 volts. When using the analog inputs to sense voltage sources, the WARNING: appropriate 3-W sense resistors, R32 and R33, must be removed.

4.6 Relay Outputs The Gen-2 can be equipped with four relay outputs that can be used to turn on and off local equipment. The optional relay outputs are FORM C type with a Common, NO, and NC contact. The typical application is to use the Common and the NO contacts.

Expansion Board Connections General Information The Gen-2 RTU can be equipped with up to 8 expansion modules. These are connected using a set of cables that connect between the RTU and the first expansion module then additional expansion modules are connected with cables between them creating a daisy chain of multiple expansion modules.

Figure 19 shows the Digital I/O expansion module and jumper locations. DI1-DI12 can act as sinking or sourcing inputs whereas DI13-DI16 can only be sinking inputs.

Each of the 4 Analog outputs has three connection terminals ‘Vin’ is the source voltage for the loop and must be supplied from the instrument or an external source.

Modbus Connections General Information The Gen-2 RTU supports MODBUS connections over RS-232, RS-485 or Ethernet. Configuration and set up for MODBUS are handled through Technical Support and are covered with separate documentation. There is one single connector on the RTU, so the customer must select one interface or the other.

Figure 22 shows the MODBUS connector location. For RS-232 mode the ‘TX’ pin is data outgoing from the RTU and the ‘RX’ pin is data incoming from the instrument/PLC.
