    H A P T E R Getting Started 1.1 Overview This chapter introduces the main features and applications of the MAX-506. The MAX-506 is an IEEE 802.16e compliant WiMAX MIMO 2.5 GHz USB Dongle for your computer. It uses Multiple-Input, Multiple-Output (MIMO) antenna technology to deliver high speed wireless Internet.

    2.2.1 Get Connected To set up your Internet connection: Open the MAX-506 Utility. You can either Click Start > All Programs > ZyXEL > MAX-506 > ZyXEL MAX-506 Utility, or double-click the connection status icon in your Windows system tray to open it.

    Chapter 2 Tutorial In the MAX-506 Utility, click the Network Settings icon and enter your WiMAX account information as it was given to you by your Internet Service Provider, then click the Apply button to save them. 2.2.2 Confirm the Connection After configuring and saving your Internet settings, you can test your connnection by clicking the On button in the MAX-506 Utility.
  • Page 17 If the authentication server accepts your username and password, then the MAX- 506 USB Dongle connects and the MAX-506 Utility reflects this. Open your Internet browser and enter http://www.zyxel.com or the URL of any other web site in the address bar. If you are able to access the web site, your wireless connection is successfully configured.

    H A P T E R MAX-506 Utility 3.1 Overview This chapter discusses WiMAX and introduces each screen in the ZyXEL utility. See the Quick Start Guide for hardware and utility installation procedures. WiMAX (Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access) is the IEEE 802.16 wireless networking standard, which provides high-bandwidth, wide-range wireless service across wireless Metropolitan Area Networks (MANs).

The following figure shows an MS- equipped notebook computer MS1 moving from base station BS1’s coverage area and connecting to BS2. Figure 4 WiMax: Mobile Station Multiple Mobile Stations WiMAX technology uses radio signals (around 2 to 10 GHz) to connect subscriber stations and mobile stations to local base stations.
  • Page 21 Chapter 3 MAX-506 Utility WiMAX uses PKM (Privacy Key Management) for authentication between the mobile or subscriber station and the base station, and supports EAP (Extensible Authentication Protocol) between the mobile or subscriber station, the base station, and the AAA server. The following figure shows a base station using an AAA server to authenticate mobile station MS, allowing it to access the Internet.

Table 5 Status Screen LABEL DESCRIPTION Status This displays the current status of the MAX-506’s WiMAX connection. The possible states are: Radio Disabled - The utility is off. Click the Connect button to switch it on.

    Click this to browse for a firmware upgrade pacakge on your computer. Firmware packages can be downloaded from your ISP or the ZyXEL web site when they become available. Note: Firmware packages typically end in a *.fw extension (for example, max506.fw).

    Chapter 3 MAX-506 Utility 3.5.1 Upgrading Your Firmware To upgrade your MAX-506’s firmware: Download the latest firmware package from either your ISP or ZyXEL.com. Note: Firmware packages typically end in a *.fw extension (for example, max506.fw). Open the MAX-506 Utility.

Bandwidth This field displays the size of the bandwidth step the MAX- 506 uses to connect to a base station in megahertz (MHz).

    Chapter 3 MAX-506 Utility 3.7 Network Settings The authentication settings required for this screen are required for using the MAX-506 to connect to your Internet Service Provider’s WiMAX network. Use the settings given to you by the ISP. If you do not configure this screen, then you will not be able to access a WiMAX network.

    If the MAX-506 utility icon is not in the system tray then click Start > Programs > ZyXEL > MAX-506 > ZyXEL MAX-506 Utility to start the program. If this does not work, browse to the MAX-506 installation folder and double-click the ZyXEL MAX-506 Utility.exe program file.

    Chapter 4 Troubleshooting If you are using a Bluetooth mouse or keyboard, try moving it further away from the computer to which the MAX-506 USB dongle is attached in order to minimize any possible interference. Then disconnect and reconnect the MAX-506. If the problem continues, contact your product vendor.
  • Page 34 Chapter 4 Troubleshooting The Internet connection is slow and intermittent or frequently disconnects. The quality of the MAX-506’s wireless connection to the base station may be poor. Poor signal reception may be improved by moving the MAX-506 away from thick walls and other obstructions, or to a higher floor in your building.
