How to connect the Surge Protection Plus
device to your portable generator
1.
Check the Status Lights - Look at the lights on the bottom of your device. No lights should be
illuminated, indicating there is a power outage at your home.
2.
Turn off all of the circuit breakers - Go to your home's circuit breaker panel and switch all
the individual circuit breakers to the off position.
3.
Place your generator closer to the Device - Connect the Surge Protection Plus (GenerLok)
power cable to your generator by inserting the four-blade plug into the 30-amp outlet on the
generator. Warning: Do not attempt to connect to a three-blade outlet on your generator or
an outlet rated higher than 30 amps.
4.
Connect power cable to the Device - Plug the GenerLok power cable into your Surge
Protection Plus device by aligning the inner notch with the front of the generator connection
port. Insert the cable into connector, there will be a snapping sound when the connector
locks in place. Do not twist power cable.
5.
Start your generator - Turn off the idle setting (if present) on your generator. This will ensure
that your generator will operate at the correct speed and voltage. Safety: Before starting
your generator, ensure that it's at least 20 feet away from your home to reduce the chance
of carbon monoxide entering the home. Refer to the generator manufacturer owner's
manual and review the generator starting procedures. Once you start your generator, the
Blue status light on the device will illuminate indicating successful generator connection.
6.
Select the appliances that require power - Go to your breaker panel and flip on the
breakers/circuits you would like to power. Remember, you can only power your circuits up to
the capacity of your generator. Turning on too many circuits (above the capacity of your
generator) will cause a low power scenario and your device will not operate effectively. Start
with larger appliances first (refrigerator or sump pump) and then slowly move to the smaller
appliances (fans and lights) and electronics (TVs and radios).
7.
Refueling your generator – When it's time to refuel your generator, tun off all of your
home's circuit breakers before turning off the generator and refuel according to your
generator's owner's manual. Then begin with Step 5, to start your generator.
8.
Tripping the generator circuit breaker - If the generator's circuit breaker trips off during
operation or setup, turn off all circuit breakers in the breaker panel, reset the circuit breaker
on the generator and restart the generator if necessary.
