  • Page 3 ABOUT THE LHZ-01 The LHZ-01 is a compact PCB (Printed Circuit Board) employing the same vintage HazLabs® preamp circuit design as used in the 80’s Spector® NS2 bass guitars. The preamp circuit is designed around the LF442CN JFET OpAmp. Unlike high-fidelity audio OpAmps used in modern equipment, the LF442CN is designed for instrumentation use, and was renowned for imparting unique harmonic overtones that helped shape the overall tone of the NS2.

The volume and blend potentiometers can vary from the standard (which is based on the potentiometers in the original HazLabs® preamps) significantly and will not impact the LHZ-01 operation. It is not uncommon for volume & blend potentiometer to range between 25k and 500k, as the values are specific for the type of pickups being used. (Consult pickup manufacturer for specifications.) These variations will not impact the performance or tonal characteristics of the preamp.

  • Page 6 Cut the power, pickup, and output jack wires. Make each cut in a location that BOTH: o Leaves enough wire to connect to the LHZ-01 preamp, and o Leaves enough wire on the original components to allow them to be re-attached in the future. (Just in case you ever want to re-install the original components.)

  • Page 8 UNPLUG WHEN NOT BEING USED The LHZ-01 preamp requires very little current, so a typical 9-volt alkaline battery will last a year or more of normal use. The preamp is powered whenever a guitar cord is plugged in which enables power to the preamp circuit. This is a standard design used for almost all pre-amps.

WIRING NOTES Every LHZ-01 is 100% tested before being shipped to ensure the preamp is fully functional and ready for use. As with any electronic devices designed for custom wiring, there is opportunity for installation errors that can adversely impact the operation of the preamp, and in certain cases permanently damage the preamp, pickups, or other components.
